Canada only really unified into an independent polity because of the British selling them out to the US in territorial disputes and the sale of Alaska to the US by Russia. Before that, there wasn't really a unified Canadian identity. It was a series of sparsely populated British colonies in the northernmost reaches of the continent. The Canadians realized they had to organize themselves to combat encroachment by the Americans.
