That's a start. But you can use more active methods like scriptorium or simple re-reading to try and force the word into your memory.
That way when you later see the word in Anki you're reminded of a word that you already know rather than one that you only vaguely remember

The best part of Anki for me is that I don't have to care about that because it shows me the word again just prior to forgetting, so it can be vague, familiar, and all things in-between. As long as reviews are done with they are presented, the program does everything else.
I let it do the hard work for me while I focus on reading things I want to read.

Wait, this is the opposite of what you said before, but if that's the case, you can just simplify your grammar.
Always use -te form to separate clauses, don't drop particles, pay attention to correct kanji/kana usage (as in don't write things in obscure ways)... I don't know, just avoid fancy stuff and you should be fine. Thing is if one word is interpreted wrong, the whole sentence can go to shit.

勝手に from what I can find can be translated a billion different ways.

腰 can mean waist, back, hips, resilience as こし or posture, position, or attitude ごし

So I'm pretty sure it's the latter. But what throws me for a loop is ふってん

I'm assuming its 沸点 which is to reach a boiling point.

I have no idea how these words should go together especially since I don't know how to apply the なに or the ふってん

Three months? If you do actually apply yourself and keep the 5 hour per day mark you should be able to read some of the simpler works without that much trouble.

You will also be able to speak tourist-level Japanese and even handle some regular conversation.

Your word count per day will increase at an unsustainable level at that %. Like, 1000s of cards a day. Better to keep it at a level you can keep with for months.

And like, listening practice or sentence reading practice is stuff you need to do anyway. You aren't wasting time. Pretty much the only way to waste a significant amount of time is by reading material that is too easy for you, and even that helps your production a bit.

If you're not in a rush (since you will still study afterwards, just not as intensively), you could also try to make individual kanji study - that will not help you reading, but will facilitate vocabulary learning and kanji recognition in the future, which is a "fundamental" step everyone skips for the sake of reading ASAP. Could be done via KKLC, RTK or whatever, that would teach you the whole Joyo batch (2136) and a few hundred more. I'm suggesting it because you say you have a linguistic background.

I imagine here 1 hour a day for vocabulary in Anki, 1 hour of KKLC (probably via Anki too) and whatever you have left reading grammar books.

That would give you between 2500 and 4500 words (60~70% of text coverage), basically all the kanji you will necessarily have to learn and a functional basic grammar that allows you to survive in the wild.

After you're back to work/school/whatever, Anki will keep taking you anywhere from 20 to 60 minutes (assuming a new routine at 20 new words per day at most), if you can edge in at least 30~60 minutes of reading as well, should be already enough to keep the net gain positive.
If you usually can spare some of your free time to entertainment, try inserting some raw anime watching, playing VNs, etc. Doesn't even feel like studying, but informed exposure is always welcome.

One alternative: Thanks to some anon mentioning it in the discord, I've been mining with the "Kenkyusha New Japanese-English Dictionary (5th ed)" (it's in CoR). It seems like a good transition to me (look at pic). Just set up the importing feature, put the sentence of whatever you're reading with the "j" key, and then import the word and the dictionary's entry.

If you are very new and don't feel ready to mine, the core decks are working out fine for everyone, and they don't cost any zenny.

I'm not sure if I should change the way I learn new words or if I'm just fucking retarded. I think this is like 10 months of anki and I still have like 80% retention and confuse words all the time. The consensus here seems to be that once you start reading, you shouldn't waste more time studying vocab because that time could be spent reading, which is more effective. But if my vocab is this shit, would it be worth it to change my Anki settings, which would probably make Anki take longer, or study vocab in some other way? Or might anyone with good retention have some ideas of what I'm doing wrong?

No that would be stupid. But reading makes your anki much easier. Try to find stuff that is "at your level" as in not too many new words. Then start spending more time on that until your anki dies down. When your anki is less than 20 minutes a day or so, then you bump up your reading difficulty a bit.

If most reading is too difficult you can watch anime with japanese subtitles and it is basically reading but with only dialogue. Anime vocab can be surprisingly hard though.

The more words you are familiar with, the easier it is to recall newer words which use kanji you've read in various comprehensive contexts. Vocab tends to build on itself, with a thousand or so different kanji being used in high frequency, so after a while you begin to get a sense of intuition about readings and general meaning of a word without necessarily having seen and reviewed it a whole lot.
I've read a few dozen manga volumes, among other things, spread out over a few years without any revision during. That is, looking up word then moving on.
This helped build up a fuzzy vocab base which may be comparable to someone with the first 1000 words of the Core10k Anki deck under their belt.
Until you get a general feel for the readings of and contexts of how the few hundred most common kanji are used in words, going at slower pace of 10 new words a day may hold back the learner more than, say, 20 words a day for a while. It sounds counter intuitive but from my limited experience at least, until I had a sort of "critical exposure" aided by extensive reading (as opposed to intensive) I had actually given up using Anki maybe five or six times.
It's a bit of a chicken and egg thing.

Since きれい is a Chinese word and 美しい is a Japanese word, you might think of きれい as "beautiful" (Latin root) and 美しい as "pretty" (Germanic root).
