Soccer is what it used to be called originally. The "soc" is for "association" (as in "association football"), and the -er diminuted was fashionable in the late 19th century.

The reason they did this was because, back then, most sports that weren't on horseback were called "football". That's why the full name is "association football", not simply "football". This is also why American football was named football. Literally most sports back then were called football, and so it made perfect sense to use an alternative name like "soccer".
