Because it's mostly the truth, more or less..we did some awful stuff, but nothing compared to what germany or those crazy japs did, even Romania went full psycho against the URSS during the first months of Barbarossa.

I think the only real warcrimes made by italians during Ww2 were in yugoslavia, since it was so full of partisans the soldiers sometimes burnt down villages and seized food/crops/animals so that often people would starve. Still, I think we were the most "human" side of the Axis and surely the less crazy one.

Another theory: 99% of the media we know about WW2 (movies, vidya, books, comics, everything really) is/was made by americans, and the USA never really fought against Italy, since when the invasion of Europe started, the fascist regime was already gone, so for the average american, the real ww2 enemies are just japs and germans

One story was told me by my grandfather. In their group of soldiers there was couple of guys who gone at night and get back in the morning during siege of Berlin for some days. Other soldiers didn't know why did they leave but there was an assumption that they were killing of germans. When army bosses found out it all of them were executed by shooting.

Cause were a charming bunch.

Also nationally we didn't have a moment of public atonement like the German did. Everybody wanted to sweep everything under the rug, hell the amnesty for the fascist war and political crimes was championed by the then leader of the Communist Party. There was aneed fo reconciliation, for 2 years more or less the country was undergoing civil war.

Only recently things came up, like what we did in Africa, the lager in Triest etc...
