The truth of the matter is that Portugal isn't worth losing all your population to conquer, and we bit hard every time they tried it.

We also attacked Spain a couple of times, but it's just too much of a (literal) uphill battle and it would not be possible to hold any victory much longer.

After that we just stuck to our own coasts and left the other be and grew apart, mostly.

There were no disputes in America, for the most part. There was the Tordesilhas treaty.

Spain wanted everything beyond a certain line, we pushed that line west and we each kept to our part. During the Iberian union, Brazil expanded west and when it broke we got to keep all of it because nobody cared about the Tordesilhas treaty anymore, and we traded Uruguay for the Amazonian bank, essentially.

Could they? They barely managed to control what they had what with the problems in the Caribbean and North America. Portugal had a very decent armada that would definitely cripple Spain's even if not defeat it, and it'd be left to be picked by England.

Not to mention that Spain/Portugal were being funded/helped/left alone by the Catholic church, who were the ones that signed the Treaty. Going against it would mean going against the church and their allies (Italian provinces and France as well, probably)
