Who's the greatest President we ever had in terms of their handling of our economy?
>>
>>75923667
Post-EDSA, Probably either P-Noy or Ramos, but that's not saying much considering they also had their share of fuckups, and in P-Noy's case at least some of his programs were continuations of GMA's. Pre-war, I read it was Garcia, but he was ridiculously corrupt.

>>
>>75923702
They say Pnoy is better than the recent presidents because he was mediocre. Opinions?
>>
>>75923783
I wouldn't say mediocre: he had his flaws and mistakes, but by standards he was above-average at the very least, a 7/10. By contrast, I'd rate Duts a 5/10: he has his intentions in the right place in some aspects, but that EJK thing and pandering to trapos is dragging him down. GMA, as corrupt as she was, was actually a decent president, and many of her policies are still being used to some extent today. Erap, I was like four when he was kicked out so not much comments on him (though apparently the consensus is that he had good intentions, but inexperience and "friendships" brought him down). Ditto for Ramos.
>>

Our loans and debt that time was normal comparing to japan and the rest of superpowers. well i dont blame the banks lending the money since our economy was next to japan
>>
>>75923958
>since our economy was next to japan
It was until the early 1980s when uncertainty and economic mismanagement did us in. We never really recovered from that.

Also, the problem with our debts is that we loaned too much and couldn't pay them back. It wouldn't have mattered if it was put to good use most of the time, but maybe less than half went to useful stuff and the rest was used to pay off Imelda and friends' shopping sprees.

State-run monopolies, mismanaged exchange rates, imprudent monetary policy and debt management, all underpinned by rampant corruption and cronyism, were among the key factors that plunged the Philippine economy into the worst economic contraction that it has experienced in its entire history.

For at least a while, such was the authoritarian control of the dictator that many of the excesses in the form of captured and corrupted state policies were unchecked. Such was the centralization of power and impunity that there was little inclination to preserve the legitimacy of the regime by reducing poverty and inequality.

As regards the much vaunted infrastructure spending during those years, they further added that “[…]the bulk of construction and other capital outlays in both the private and public sectors were not very productive and many were outrightly wasteful.”

>>75924462

They're all so big!
>>
>>75924516
It's not really the amount of debt that's the problem, it's how you manage it and if you're able to pay it back. And the US is having some problems with its debts, which is why the debt ceiling is a big thing over there. It's that the US economy is big enough that it's able to manage debts properly. With less developed countries like the Philippines (and more famously, Greece), the problems can become harder to manage and debts can stun economic progress.

Not really accurate. Much of SEA had trade links with India, which is why Hinduism and later Buddhism gained a stronghold here. The Philippines wasn't strongly affected due to its location and the fact that the Muslims were on their way by the time the Hindus and Buddhists could have had an influence here. However, there were enough trade links, both direct and indirect, to allow some cultural assimilation to take place.

Interestingly enough, it appears that there are actually at least a million Buddhists here, though most of them are Chinese Filipinos. Also, I found it weird to learn that the INCs only number about two million in the country when they're so powerful and so rich.

No. As I said, while we weren't strongly affected by Indianization, unlike other parts of SEA, trade relations were large enough for some aspects of Indian culture to arrive here. We even have a local word for elephant (gadya) even though locally elephants became extinct thousands of years ago. Also, it's said that some local arts, like the sarimanok, had Indian influences.

>Jocano further believes that the present Filipinos are products of the long process of cultural evolution and movement of people. This not only holds true for Filipinos, but for the Indonesians and the Malays of Malaysia, as well. No group among the three is culturally or genetically dominant. Hence, Jocano says that it is not correct to attribute the Filipino culture as being Malayan in orientation.

Same grammar as Indonesian, most are analytic languages, very simple grammar. Phonology is a different things tho, there're three subgroups of Austroasiatic that have tones (Paluangic, Vietic and Pakanic) all influence by Chinese or Tai languages. Almost all Austroasiatic has implosive consonants (/ɓ/ and /ɗ/), minor syllables (we lost it anyway), aspirated consonant (Vietnamese has /tʰ/, /kʰ/, /pʰ/), complex vowels (tense and lax, long and short, so four version of the same vowels, Vietnamese lost it all lol), dipthrongs and tripthrongs. Khmer has a pretty pure typical Austroasiatic phonology.

I doubt it. Unlike Duts (who at least was mayor and representative prior to becoming prez), FPJ had no politicial experience whatsoever. Sure we had Cory, but she was the exception rather than the rule, and she was a brilliant student and had good advisers backing her. With FPJ, he would have probably been an Erap 2.0, having good intentions but being brought down by a lack of experience, and the influence of his friends.

It could just be that they wanted to colonize for economic and political reasons. So religion could be left alone. However missionaries tend to follow colonization too.
