We aren't, for the most part. Australia wasn't a prison colony prior to federation. In fact the colonies only started to have crims shipped over after the American British colonies were too full with them and they needed to free up space, yet no one memes about how the USA was a prison colony, when realistically it certainly could be labelled as such, using the logic involved in calling Australia one.

the initial colonies were founded as convict settlements, it wasn't after America stopped. The Swan River Colony was the only one to receive convicts after the fact.
Australian culture stems from the convict experience too. Almost every defining feature of "australianess" has been directly linked to the fact that we were a convict settlement. Our accent exists because we received convicts from all over the British Isles, including lots of irish.

Very few settlers were actually rich too. There were some, but it was normally the lower middle class that came over or the family of convicts that had no choice but to follow their husband/father to Australia.
