>just read that English and German have 56% lexical similarity
I don't believe this. Germanons, is this true in your experience? Are the languages really that close?
>>75767425
Dutch and frisian are even more similar to english
The less inkhorn terms you use in English the closer it is to other German langauges, but there's still massive differences in modern English and modern German because of the lack of case system, phonology, word order etc
>>75768975
languages*, sorry
why are americans that stupid? a lot of german words are just slightly different than english
for example
schulter - shoulder
alt - old
neu - new
haare - hairs
wetter - weather
etc
probably shouldnt expect americunt who knows 1 language to know that
>>75767425
There are even some words that are exactly the same
Hand - Hand
Wind - Wind
Hammer - Hammer
and some others
>>75770841
Was English easy to learn due to that?
yes
someone post the "EU making changes to get English to sound like German" copy-pasta
>>75770871
Absolutely.
But it also has to do with the ridiculous amount of pop culture like movies you guys produce.
Always good to see a movie in their native language. Combine these two factors and it shouldn't be surprising why every smart German should know perfect English.
>>75770871
English is pretty easy overall. But pronunciation is a problem, especially since the way words are written rarely reflects how they are pronounced.
>>75771037
Yep.
You can only guess if an A means A or O or even E.
>in "crafting" a A means E
>in "war" a A means O
>in "run" a U means A
Totally ridiculous.
>>75771093
>>in "crafting" a A means E
>>in "run" a U means A
wrong
The word order is different. It's pronounced differently. It's conjugated differently. It often doesn't even mean the same thing.
But the languages are very related.
that includes 1 gorillion latin terms for biology and medicine and shit
keine englischer kann dies lesen
>>75768914
swedish is even closer
by far the easiest language for english speakers to pick up
>>75771430
this
>>75767425
A lot of the similarities comes from the Danish invasion ~1000 years ago.
The two languages developed sided by side, until the English decided to just French their shit up.
>>75771611
iirc there was a theory proposed recently that English should be reclassified as a north germanic language because of how much influence danelaw had on it
>>75771632
https://www.apollon.uio.no/english/articles/2012/4-english-scandinavian.html
>>75771632
this theory has been debunked as many Indic language influence each other constantly but no one reclassifies
>>75771407
first is incorrect
second is correct for the german way of pronounciation
>>75767425
>>just read that English and German have 56% lexical similarity
just - just
read - gelesen
that - dass
English - Englisch
and - und
German - Deutsch
have - haben
56% - 56%
lexical - lexikalisch
similarity - Ähnlichkeit
Yes, it is true
Frisian is much closer
Brea, bûter en griene tsiis is goed Ingelsk en goed Frysk
>>75771702
>Danish
8 = acht?????
Pls it is 8 = otte.
>>75767425
yeah, but sometimes they have a slightly different meaning, like stuhl means chair in english but stool means schemel in german
>>75771783
with how autistic your numbering system is it's probably tre tre en en
>>75767425
even very distant languages have some lexical similarity, english is considered germanic, so yeah.
>>75767425
Where do you think the "Saxon" in "Anglo-Saxon" comes from?
>>75771806
? Why
>>75771915
If i speak Frisian, you can't fucking understand me. So fuck off with this meme. Maybe if you speak ancient English we could with much puzzling make a conversation about the weather. But so can a German or Dane.
>>75771593
>swedish is even closer
>by far the easiest language for english speakers to pick up
Not true at all
>>75771632
iirc theres not academic credability to this as it just doesn't work with the comparative method
There are certain sound changes unique to English and frisian which this theory fails to address.
>>75772057
Still frisian is closer to english than Danish or german linguistically
>>75771093
Go back to Meincreft, kiddo
Examples:
One afternoon, Hans came home from his job at BMW and found three Syrian men filling all of his wife's holes. Hans didn't want anyone to think that he was a Nazi, so he smiled and said "I will go now. Continue."
Eines Nachmittags kam Hans von seinem Job bei BMW nach Hause und fand drei syrische Männer die alle Löcher seiner Frau füllten. Hans wollte niemand glauben, dass er ein Nazi war, so lächelte er und sagte "Ich jetzt gehen. Weiter."
>>75772200
your German is excellent. Where have you learnt it??
>>75772086
Ja. Maar ze doen altijd alsof Fries een Engels dialect is door Friese gezegden te plakken uit Google. Dat is gewoon gelul. Ze spreken waarschijnlijk niet eens andere taal. En zeker geen Fries.
>>75767425
Italian and Romanian have like 70%, I think it's a bit like that thing where human and chimp dna has 98% similarity.
>>75772234
he's just on holiday in spain
>>75772294

>>75771593
>swedish is even closer
>by far the easiest language for english speakers to pick up
Are you a fucking Swede. Frisian is by far the closest to English. It's like a sibling language.
>>75772346
>It's like a sibling language.
It's also a meme language with >0,5m speakers
>>75772200
lel sehr gut
>>75771012
>Combine these two factors and it shouldn't be surprising why every smart German should know perfect English.
Are Ossies stereotypically less fluent, or is English fluency fairly balanced on both sides of the country?
>>75772373
Doesn't matter, it's the last one we have.
>>75771611
>Danes invade Anglo-Saxons
>Angles
>Saxons
>not already speaking Old English, which is a close branch of Old German
No doubt lots of Norse words were added (anything with a "sk" we can thank you for) but come on lad.

>>75772438
>but come on lad
Half of England was under Danish rule, with Vikings living in it.
English adopted very much, mostly because it was close already.
Danish have since then adopted a lot of Netherland'ish words from war and seafaring.
lexical similarity doesn't mean that the words are exactly the same

Jesus, calm down
