We learn pretty much nothing about the history of our former overseas territories because that's considered their own history, not ours. So they tell you that we came there, add some basic things and then they go back to Europe. Then later on they casually mention their independences.

Cuba is a different case because losing it really affected us so we cover the issue pretty extensively.
