An some Americans enlighten me about the word 'African-American'? From my understanding it just refers to a black person but that doesn't make much sense to me. Would an Egyptian or other people from north Africa that naturalise in the US be 'African-Americans'?

Saying African-American is as autistic as saying Caucasian American.
No one does it outside paper work.
african american? most people just call me nigger. seriously though african american is a retarded word. i have literally zero connection to africa

People don't often use the term "African American" in day to day talk. Usually just "black" is used.

Not sure if you are stupid but they'd be called Egyptian-American or Rwandan-American. Not that hard

AA has a much better reception and image then the word Black. There are studies on it.

You culture does though a lot.
Is it just me or the term African American actually seems more (((((offensive)))) than black if you think about it
When you say black you just refer to their skin colour, that's it. Nothing inherently wrong with it
When you say African American in a way you point out that their ancestors were slaves, which is kinda weird to do everytime you refer to a black person
No? Just me?
"African American" came about as a black empowerment thing, be proud of your origins you are part of a brotherhood yadda yadda. Too make the white people feel more comfortable addressing them.
You will never see two black folk call each other African Americans unless it's ironically or they are diehard fuck Whitey's

I was about to type out basically the same thing. White people are just called white. African-American makes them sound like they were just pulled off a boat. They're black for fuck's sake, they've been in this country longer than most whites.
Next to African-American I have rarely heard the term Irish-American and Italian-American, but never heard things like German-American, French-American British-American, only Prussian-American on /int/ once kek

>Irish-American and Italian-American
Them not counting as white is remembered by the collective conscious for whatever reason
>German-American
They're the largest ethnicity so people don't think about them as an entity
>French-American
Cajuns
>British-American
That's just an OG American
>Prussian-American
See German-American
