I have lots of poor family members, their houses are not so bad. Very plain and sometimes they can be hoarders but no trash etc.

My poorest family member was my auntie who could not work, she was too sick. As of now, I have no refrigerator and I am doing just fine. Mine broke one month ago, and I simply couldn't bother to call the repairman, because I don't actually need a bloody refrigerator. I can drink room temperature water, just like my ancestors did. I only miss the fact that I cannot conserve cheese and ice cream anymore, but that makes it harder for me to get fat, so in the end it's actually a good thing.

My parents also own a big house - more than 100 meters from the backyard to the gates.

In the Medieval times, it was absolutely terrible. People threw their excrements into the streets so that the garbage collector would take it and use it as fertilizer. The streets were very narrow. Houses were too small for the families, and people often lived in the same room, and even slept at the same bed. They rarely showered.

But then again, Medieval times were nothing like what the people in OP's picture are experiencing. At least Medieval men and women had the excuse of living in a society where barbarianism had triumphed over civilization.

You have to understand, in a place as rich as the US, poverty is a culture, not a material condition.

Indian reservations like Pine Ridge are a mess because alcoholism has basically destroyed the family unit, the local governments are inept, none of the really successful people want to live on the reservation.

Pine Ridge, specifically, was so corrupt that in the 70s it had a literal civil war that killed 30 people.

The federal government legally can't intervene to remove corrupt local officials because the treaties that established the reservations gave the natives the right to self governance within the rez.

So you have schools that are shit, local communities that are drunk all of the time, and parents who don't raise their kids.

Chiapas is the poorest state and has te largest amount of indigenous in the country.
Is fine tho, chiapas is also one of the safest states in the country and the only thing indigenous tribes want is autonomy and have their human rights respected.
Most of their income comes from a form of internal market and they are very independent from the peso currency, some may take it as a joke but it's not that uncommon to practice banter in the less accesible towns.
