Defectors have a terrible time adapting to life in the South, especially the idea of having to make their own life decisions instead of obeying orders. There's political, economic, and strategic ties with Beijing, but to call them a Chinese client state is misleading, they've really never been that at any point.

Beijing wants to preserve the status quo uber alles, although it can be pointed out that North Korea's continued existence, while beneficial to them in a number of ways, also has the downside of justifying a US military presence in East Asia.
