Why are americans so loud and rude yet act as if they're friend with everyone?

they're psychos

>>
I'd describe the Americans I've met so far as weirdly detached, or seeming as though they're feigning politeness. In other words, true protestants, north European descendants.

So you'd prefer if we ignored each other or treated each other like shit? Maybe that's why France is perceived as snobbish.
>>

It's a waste of time for everyone involved, it's sterile, it's evil because the stranger could really believe you want to be his friend, it's confusing, etc.

Friendly Americans always look like they're trying to sell you something. But in France, even salesmen and waiters are aloof: they let you do your own thing without unneeded disturbance. It's not rudeness, it's politeness.

>>
>>75509743
cities are a different story,

Rural Americans are more friendly to strangers, while inner city people are less likely to chat with strangers.

Same thing applies with France, French people outside of Lyon, Paris and Marseilles are very nice and friendly. Every single french person living in those cities are garbage however.

If you have shit to do I'm not gonna keep you, but I'll say hey and chit chat if we're standing around for a few minutes. You aren't necessarily making a new friend but meeting a new person. Everyone has a story, I've met a lot of cool people with just a "hey, how's it goin."

Nah, that's not what I mean. Let me give you an example
>Group of Americans at a bus stop
>Small talk, comments on cloths, the wait, the weather, discussing local politcs etc.

>Go on vacation to England
>Brother and I are waiting at a bus stop, three other people
>They're all looking at their shoes and glancing around occasionally
>I ask "So, how're you guys doing?"
>No ones says anything, complete silence
Like, what the fuck man? I haven't gone to France but from what I read online it's similar all across Europe.
>>
>just because you give someone a bit of interest they'll think you want a deeper relationship
Do all Europeans have this beta male mindset? "If a girl says hello to me enough times she must want to fuck!". Pathetic
>>
>>75509934
It's just a different culture. Americans are taught to acknowledge everyone, even if for 20 seconds.
>>
>>75509230
>define "fake kindness"
Southern middle/upper class white women come to mind. They are nice to your face and then gossip about you.
>>
>>75510082
>Southern middle/upper class white women
good example, I didn't think of women.
>>
It's just American culture to be childish. Americans get use to it so they think acting childish is being sociable. You gotta cope with this because Americans are one of the most arrogant but the strongest nation in the world.

As a doorman at a 5-star hotel, it's pretty much my job to act friendly to rich strangers all day (and tell the homeless to fuck off—polarizing, isn't it?).

Most Europeans I chat up don't seem to mind, so I'm not sure why Europeans on /int/ make remarks about American small talk culture. I admit that rich people are probably in better spirits than poor people, so that's probably a definite factor.

Pic related is the GOAT doorman, btw.
>>
>>75509934
so i'm at the bus stop, deep in thoughts about bills, work, vacations, relationships, family, then get interrupted to talk about the weather or exchange names.

>>
Since we're discussing europe/american social differences, might as well ask. What do "american accents" sound like to Europeans? i.e, the French sound swindle-y and upper to us class, german accents sound harsh, spaniards sound retarded and like gay mexicans..

>>75510464

>>
>>75510464
Being greeted by a doorman at a 5-star hotel is normal, being greeted by a random guy on the streets is fishy. If I don't know you already, chances are that you are a criminal or a loony, and I don't want to have anything to do with you. If you really want to start small talk in Europe, you need to comment on something like the weather, or ask some non-personal question, to break the ice and reassure the other person that you are not some drug addict begging for money

You see a correlation in how tourist acts depending on which country they're from. Stereotypes exists for a reason. In my experience Americans were usually very friendly and liked to talk but could switch their mood in a moments notice and become extremely aggressive and self entitled demanding things they had no right to demand.

Americans are very pleasant to deal with when nothing is wrong but if anything is wrong instead of calmly trying to solve it they usually ended up screaming. I remember this American guy shoving up a 16 year old guy who was in his first week at the job against the wall because he said he couldn't check in for another few hours. Sure, if you have flown for 10 straight hours like this American had I could understand that you're pissed off but shoving a skinny kid up the wall for telling you bad news is only something I could see an American. This wasn't an isolated incident either. Similar things had happened before.

I actually like the American way of relating to strangers, even here in a southern european country people are cold, won't talk to each other..

Meeting new people, forcing yourself out of your comfort zone is more important nowadays than ever, since we can now chose like minded groups of individuals to close ourselves within.

I try to chat with strangers too but most times I only get replies from tourists or erasmus students, i.e. foreigners

The worse part about Europe is the grumpy clerks/personnel everywhere, be it a restaurant, or a store or an airport or whatever. Even if you don't like smalltalk in America, you will certainly appreciate the friendliness of our customer service even if people think it is fake (it probably is but who cares if they smile at you and are eager to help you instead of ignoring you).
>>

Question for non-Americans in this thread: how do you meet new people?
Seriously, all of my long time friends have been strangers that I met either at school or somewhere in public.
Were you out in the schoolyard as kids, saw some kid, and, as expected by your culture, you were a complete dick to them, and now you guys are friends? Don't get me wrong, that happens here, but common courtesy seems to work a little better.
I just can't imagine someone being pissed off about some decent human contact unless they are having a bad day, which is usually signaled within the first 10 seconds of talking to them.

You're the reason why people think English is simple and the language of reality TV. Not something to be proud of, if you actually care about the language. It is essentially a luxury car being driven by loud mouth peasants. Thanks for bastardising the modern English language and poisoning everything your nation comes in contact with.

>>
>>75523608

>>
>>75523675
I guess our definition of "stranger" is different.
When I made friends at school, sure I knew their names and where they sat in class, but I didn't know anything about them. Usually it was as simple as, "Do you like Super Smash Bros? Cool, want to come over after school?"
I would still consider them a stranger at this point, but when they'd come over, my mom was very nice to them, provided us with drinks and food if we were hungry, and we'd just hang out.
And that's how many of my 15+ year friendships were born.
>>
[WARNING: THIS IS JUST A GENERALIZATION.]

Politeness, for an American: "I'll be talkative with the person, trying to make them feel at home."
Politeness, for an European: "I won't bother the person. If they want something, they'll bloody ask."

>>
>>75508292
In america it is considered customary to talk to people when you interact with them and speak clearly and audibly when speaking with them.
Apparently europeans find this intimidating if all the stories about them getting triggered by american tourists making small talk are to believed.
>>
>>75508840
>>75509183
I am genuinely terrible at remembering peoples faces, It takes me months of interaction with someone before I could pick them out of a crowd, but I try to be polite anyway and assume that if they are acting like they know me than they probably do.
>>
>>75523933
I think >>75523796 nailed it. In America, being talkative/being spoken to is considered polite. You want to make strangers feel like they just walked into grandma's house and you're happy to see them. We have kind of a "nice until proven otherwise" policy when judging other folks. These conversations usually last no longer than one minute, and in the case that they do, it usually means a good conversation has spawned, which is all-around a good thing. If an American has to be somewhere, he'll tell you. We're very forward like that. And no offense will be taken if you are busy and have something to do.
This thread actually blew me away. It's so ingrained in us since birth to be talkative and polite with strangers that I don't see it as either "fake" or "annoying", and I'm sure most folks here don't either. This is good knowledge to have, if I ever decide to go abroad. Yurops like to be left alone.

>>75523796
This seems good, I'd agree from my side. If they don't feel like talking for some reason like >>75523796 mentioned, they could always say it's been a rough day and they arent feeling talkative. I'd respect just that and wish them the best.

You always have the option to not talk, its not forced. You could even ignore us. If we weren't in a primarily English speaking country we'd probably assume you didn't speak English.

You don't have to be friends to hope others are happy and well. But a strangers word might make a difference.
>>
>>75511756
It may be unfair to judge a country by it's tourists, I have noticed that wanderlust appeals greatly to assholes.
Or rather the typical tourist activities appeal to assholes, when normal people travel they act like they treat the country they visit like they would anywhere else, while when assholes travel they treat the country they visit like a theme park.

>>
>>75525436
I don't want anything from you.
Just asking a question in order to break the awkward silence.
>>
>>75525478
See, I think this is the problem. Small talk isn't unusual at least over here, but it's how Americans approach strangers with small talk that's off putting.

Instead of talking about something mundane to initiate the conversation like the weather, they'll ask someone how they're doing, or ask what their name is, or some other personal details. Even though it's just a meaningless phrase, you only ask friends how they're doing over here.
>>
>>75525521
For example I would only ask a stranger "How's it going?" If I had ulterior motives. It's the kind of thing you would ask a girl on the beach, and the subtext implies you want to fuck them.

This is why it's weird having some stranger at a bus stop saying it.

>>
>>75525659
Sure, but again social custom here is to not ask anything perceived as being personal. It's only the elderly over here who would ask something like that, but because of their age they're endearing.

Again, the critical thing is for small talk to be meaningless and non personal. So subject matter is:

> Weather e.g "Lovely day today, isn't it?"
> Circumstance e.g "Have you been waiting here for long?"
> Belongings/Posessions in sight e.g "Is that the new X Phone" "How old is your dog?" If female, you can compliment someone on thieir clothing, but tread carefully with this.

Asking for directions is tolerated, but seldome leads to further conversation.

The safest bet is always to talk about the weather. We just have different customs when it comes to small talk, and the confusion comes from when Americans act like they're in America. Even though we speak English and share much more in common than divides us, the differences do still exist.

for most people, small talk is done because they want to talk, but are not brave or socially competent enough to think of something worth saying. They would probably be glad if you steered the conversation towards something more interesting. Although, if you don't want to talk to them, just say so.

For a lot of people, small talk is like foreplay for most guys. they don't particularly hate or enjoy it, but they are trying to establish some sort of rapport before asking questions that they are actually interested in. going up to a stranger and asking personal or controversial questions is like going in dry.

My cousin almost got killed by one of those things in Texas back when we were 14. Shot it with his dad's hunting rifle.
