The monarch is the head of state in Canada, represented by the Governor-General, his staff and his responsibilities (such as the Canadian honours system). The Governor-General is a Canadian chosen by the Canadian prime minister. No Canadian money goes to the queen, to any of the royals or to any part of the monarchy outside its virtual representation (in the Governor-General) and official visits.
If they abolished the monarchy tomorrow, they would still need a head of state and it would likely cost as much if not more than the current system
