I don't think so. "Open casket" means you don't close the coffin until you go to put them in the ground.

Wakes are the night before the funeral, not the service itself.

When my grandma died they held a fiesta

There was even a tradition where they couldn't leave the dead alone overnight so my dad, my mum and his relatives all slept in the church

Yeah. You have an open casket and it's like a party - everyone gets together to talk about the person who died and shit. Even funerals without an open-casket service are parties here. I know the concepts of 'fun' and 'meaningful social interaction' are completely alien to snowniggers, but even you should be able to understand.
>>
>>75199697
it's ok sven i promise the spooky dead man won't hurt you

although come to think of it scandcucks are too autistic to have any sort of social gathering in the first place so maybe that explains it
>>

holy shit what???? it takes literally a couple of days to get someone from the status of 'found rip' to the funeral (or burning) here. they spend a day in the morgue for the specialist to find out specific cause of death and prep them for the funeral, but that's about it for delays
>>
>>75199959
you're the one sperging out over a pretty common christian tradition that multiple nations ITT have said they also participate in
>>
>>75199886
People usually express how they want to be buried in advance here. So yes, in a lot of cases they do actually want to have an open-casket service.
>>
>>75199886
it is more about celebrating the things the person did while alive and saying goodbye to him.

>>
>>75199981
It's a little more complicated here, because people often die thousands of miles away from where they'll eventually be buried. For example, I live in Memphis and one of my friends died while in Portland. The family had his body transported back here (about 3500 km) to bury him in a family plot at a local cemetery.
>>
>>75199959
depends on the family, when my uncle died, his sons/daughter wanted to do the whole works with the funeral. My father just wanted to bury him and get back home, seemed like a waste of time since his brother was already dead.

we have a glorious feast right after we have sent the dead one away. it has a name, but it is untranslatable to english. we set a table and in the centre we set a seat for the one who has gone away with body, but remains with us in spirit. we fill the glass with drink and plate with food so when we salute his/her name the spirit is taking part in the sending away...

Not sure where you're getting this from. Our funerals are like yours except with closed caskets, probably more silent during the event because we show respect to the dead person and his loved ones. But you Americans seem to have a hard time knowing when to shut your mouths
>>
Personally I'd like to be cremated when I die because you'll just be forgotten in 100 years anyway, so there's no point in burial unless you're famous.
>>
>>75200580
It's usually after.
We sit in church and listen to the priest and family talk about the dead guy then he gets buried so they have to transport the body.

After that there's usually food with pictures of the dead guy around
>>
>>75200690
i'm getting this from this thread where you and the danecuck are the only prissy little fruitcakes who are offended at the idea of looking at a corpse or speaking at a funeral while every other country agrees that viewings are normal and funerals are supposed to be social events
>>
>>75198879
What you are describing is a wake which usually takes place the day before the funeral. Open casket funeral is just a normal funeral but with the casket open hence the name.
>>
>>75200746
but why would you want to look at a corpse though
>>
>>75200690
>But you Americans seem to have a hard time knowing when to shut your mouths
You Swedes have a hard time knowing when to shut your borders.
>>
I was in my grandfather's funeral a couple months ago and it was quite nice.

First the coffin is brought to the church yard by a funeral coach, then six men of the family, including me, my brother and my father come and pick up the coffin and slowly walk through the aisle of this old wooden church while the organs are playing and lay the white birch coffin next to the altar where the priest performs the final blessing and pours gravel on the coffin in the shape of a cross.

Then the funeral convoy, led by the six men carrying the coffin and the priest walk through the cemetery to lay the coffin on top of the scaffold overlooking the grave site. After this everyone lays their flowers on the coffin and says their final words to the deceased. First comes the widow and the couple's children, then comes the grandchildren and after that siblings.

Finally the six men who carried the coffin to the grave site come and slowly lower the coffin into the pit while the priest sings a deep hymn with the funeral envoy. After this the everyone tosses a fistful of soil on the coffin and says their final goodbyes.

I was never really close with my grandfather and didnt really feel anything when he died, I only cried in the funeral when I saw how heartbroken everyone was, nobody could hold back their tears in that moment.

After that came the memorial situation where everyone gathered in the cemetery chapel to eat together and celebrate the life of the deceased.

This was in rural Karelia though, I don't know about funeral traditions elsewhere, pic related was the church
>>
>>75198879
We have wakes to but people don't come to eat there. They come to salute the person.
>>

>>
>>75200849

>>
We have the open caskets but I've never seen it combined with snacks. As was said about the open casket is at a viewing which is done at a funeral home, followed by the funeral and burial, followed by the reception where you have food.
>>
>>75200859

Open casket wakes always have sweet food and incense, because that masks the rotting smell. After the 12th hour, the body starts to smell sweet, and sugary foods mask that.

i buried my grandfather earlier this year

found him dead in his apartment. the medical unit took him away and i had to settle the for the funeral.

a black car took the coffin of oak to the last ceremony. we carried his coffin into the holy place with six men. me, my father and the sons of my fathers brother, who were three. we opened the casket in the holy place.

there were musicians playing his favorite classical tunes (or karelian origin). the 'father' blessed his going.

we all sent him away with good wishes with a kiss on the cheek and whispers into the ear.

then we closed the casket and carried him into the burial site. we lowered him into the ground while a young girl sung a lament.

then we all threw three fistfuls of ground into the grave and set candles.

then we (the men) shoveled the grave full of ground.

we proceeded to the inn for the final remembrance.

i would guess around 2 meters at most. in my part of the ground we have sandy soil so the dead stay in the ground forever.
i hear in the northern part of estonia they dig shallower graves, but since there is only limestone it dissolves everything but bone so it's not a problem

If dead people don't open their caskets, then how are we supposed to tip them?
>>
>>75208683
i cant tell if that image is a reaction to that silly custom or an attempt to mimic the grinning corpse
>>
>>75208783
And you will never know. Life should have a few mysteries.

Wake is when you chill out after the funeral
>>
>>75198879
Its more of a Catholic thing. And it's called a wake dumb-ass. Everyone gets to see the deceased one last time in a peaceful manor, and pay their respects. Since it usually occurs around lunch time snacks are provided for those giving their last good-byes and respects to the deceased. Its a good-bye party in the dead's honor. It helps some cope with the loss.

As if only Americans do this. Scandinavia is being weird again.

>watch while the surrounding people eat food and snacks

I've never seen anyone eat snacks in front of an open casket. What the fuck do you people smoke in denmark?

As someone who has worked in a Swedish funeral home I can explain how most funerals we held look like (unless it's a cremation cermony)
>the funeral home puts the body in the coffin
>any family relics or such as well are put in
>we load the casket into a hearse
>we drive it to the cermony building (usually located on funeral grounds)
>meanwhile the friends and families have had a wake, said some words and such
>when the hearse arrives it drives to the building, it get's carried inside
>people say their last good bye
>casket get's carried to the grave
>we lower the casket down into the ground
>family and friends walks over from the wake building
>priest or what ever says some fancy, sad words, a song is playing, usually this one in 7/10 cases
>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IEWoqz0tWVM
>the family maybe have a speach, then it's done
>the grave get's filled in, people leave
Usually doesn't takem ore than one hour.
>>

Yep that's pretty much how my grandpas funeral looked liked, but they drove his casket directly to the grave.
>>
>>75198879
So what do you have closed casket funerals only? How do you say goodbye to the loved one?
>>
>>75198879
when my grandfather was buried the casket was open and people could have a look before the ceremony itself.
they asked if I want to have a look, but I really didn't feel the need
>>
I thought everyone did this.
Close casket is only when the body is just unsightly.
>>
>>75200984
The bodies are pumped with formaldehyde which prevent decomposition for several decades.
>>
>>75198879
They do this in NZ as well
The only funeral I've been too was open casket
>>
>>75199378
It's simply a vigil, a goodbye, for the dead.
I don't know what's so strange or weird about it.
Please explain.

If it's the "snacks" that bother you.
It really depends, some people don't have snacks at all, some just have coffee, tea, water, etc. Some are more extravagant. but it never perceived as disrespectful, and people don't eat on top of the body. they go sit somewhere away from the casket, and greet the bereaved and stuff.
>>
>>75209499
Yeah m8 I forgot that they won't be able to hear us because of the casket

You telling me a open casket will help?
>dead uncle Tommy can hear me better if the casket is open

You just throw your people down a river, so STFU
>>
>>75209705
And you're just one condescending edgy fedorafag.
>>

This is every funeral I've ever been at. I haven't to many wakes though but the casket is usually not in the room where you're eating snacks. This is not normal in eurostan?
>>
>>75209736
Oh look he got upset.
I simply don't understand it.
I have buried my father, grandfather and a friend.
We don't have open casket funerals.
Standing around a dead corpse is strange as fuck.
>>
>>75209717
I'm Kashmiri actually but atleast we don't behead them after putting their cut off benis in their mouth
>>
>>75200132
But is not an American tradition, it's just OP, he's a faggot
>>
>>75199836
A week or two? Have you ever had anyone you know die? It takes like a couple days max
>>
>>75209740
>This is not normal in eurostan?
No.. People wanna get that shit over with as fast as possible. Most funerals take less than 1 hour.
>casket put in the ground
>speach : he/she was a good person bla bla
>gets covered with dirt
>everybody goes home/to the pub
>>
>>75198879
I've never heard of people eating food at an open casket, but I don't understand what's wrong with them?

Usually people want to give a kiss on the forehead, or hold their hand for one last time before they're put in the ground.
>>
>>75209705
You're the only person in this thread who has said this is weird.

Technically speaking, you are the weird one.
>>
>>75209906
>Technically speaking, you are the weird one.
Yeah and? It's still weird here.
>>
Everyone in the Christian world does this except for Scandis you dumb cheese slicer using pig fuck.

We get it, you're all autistic and can't handle interacting with other human beings even when they're dead.
>>
>>75209193
Seems more practical, I hated going to funerals for people I did not know but was dragged to. With everyone giving their long speeches, crying, and waiting for them to bury the dead, it gets incredibly boring.
>>
>>75198879
Eh? We do that too, I thought that was a common thing all around the world.
>>
>>75209974
>it gets incredibly boring.
I can imagine.
And people here don't really wanna be wasting time when it's a high chance it's cold as fuck outside.
When my grandfather was buried it was -38 C outside..
>>
Do scandis just throw their dead in a snow drift or something?
>>
>>75210144
>Do scandis just throw their dead in a snow drift or something?
No but funerals are not advanced gatherings..
>put the coffin in the ground
>say a few words
>go get drunk
>>
We do it too.

I only ever went to one funeral (my mother's) and it had an open casket.
Don't remember anyone eating though, but I can't really remember much of that day besides the shock.
