At 8:41pm ET on 5/19/2017 Reddit removed three The_Donald mods because we refused to comply by a special set of rules that were solely imposed on this subreddit to marginalize the only major community which doesn't conform to the echo chamber of Reddit and corporate media.

Our mod team continues to stand strong in support of free speech, equal treatment and application of the rules for all subreddits. We are temporarily private in a show of strength against these unfair and unequal rules.

lim (x -> inf) x

st(inf)
undefined

nice and formal
you just literally substitute a transfinite hyperreal number for the variable and take the standard part (round to the nearest real)
undefined limits are undefined since the standard part is undefined for transfinite arguments

lim (x -> 0+) ln(x)
st(ln(eps))
st(-inf)
undefined

limits approaching from the negative or positive directions are easy with infinitesimals

I mean there are minor differences, but like I cannot fathom why there has been a war over northern ireland for example.

What is the point, what difference does it make to the price of bread if you have a british union jack or an irish tricolour flying over your head?

If I got a nice job offer in Ireland or the netherlands or germany, I would treat it no differently to me getting a job offer in a different a job in scotland or wales or north england. My life would not substantially differ. Then why be proud of this patch of clay? why die over it?

This is stupid though.

Do you have more affinity to wallonians who are belgian french people or to tahitians who are tahitians under french rule?

in some sense you're equally as disconnected from either. just because someone speaks the same language to you and has a similar lifestyle doesn't mean much at the end of the day. even you're second and third cousin you may not know or particularly care about. so why does one care enough about something so large and abstract, enough to fight and die for it.

nationalism is just another convenient lie to promote control
people say its "just tribalism" which is not true because nation-states often have very little to do with the tribes that inhabit them beyond enforcing a collective manufactured tribal identity nation-wide.

I feel much more strongly about my home region than I do my country or people living on the other side of it beyond some general friendliness and common attitudes towards things.

The culture of the country helps shape who you are as a person. You'll always have more in common with your countrymen than anyone else. I think it's more odd not to favour the country which you have this massive sense of belonging to over others, unless you either feel like you don't fit in somehow.

World citizen bullshit. Culture doesn't not exist out of thin air. If France is where it is in the world now, it's because generations of men sweat and bled to build it and defend it. To not care about having borders, to open it for all the trash in the world is disrespectful and suicidal.

objectively false.
/int/ itself shows that I can have resonate with strangers across the world more than my own next door neighbour.

I don't think most people do feel like they fit in. We live in an age where people are beginning to be able to actually ignore national boundaries and we're seeing that people actually like people from other countries.

Would I and a person from bermuda or gibraltar or even someone from northumbria really have been shaped into the same person, so distinctively that i should automatically prefer them to someone from holland or kyrgyzstan or timbuktu? I'm not really convinced that is the case.

There are cultural differences, I might find germans to be neurotic relative to the norm i've grown up around for example, but whether those differences are worth defending and dying over makes me wonder.

>/int/ itself shows that I can have resonate with strangers across the world more than my own next door neighbour.
On a personal level for you, this is the case on a wider scale it's not the case at all. You've sought out a community with similar interests or mindset. Do you think your 45 year old next door neighbour that works at superdrug would feel the same about some random Chinese bloke across the world? Then the look at the general population.

The perspective you're looking from may become more true in the future due to now massive connectivity. Populations as a whole aren't at the point yet.

It's interesting actually. I met a guy at the pub the other day in his 4os who came up to talk to me and my friend.

>next door neighbour
He was telling us that he met a south african police officer online and that they hit it off so well the police officer came over to visit him, and he was planning on going there.

but anecdotes aside i see your point. But I think its again narrow, would my next door neighbour feel as little connection to someone who is nobility as to a rnadom chinese peasant, despite spatial proximity.

The nation state is a spook, I thoroughly believe I'd be the same person had I grown up here or in ireland or even in mali (controlling for things like income and who my parents are).

In fact I used to know a lot of diplomatic kids, who grew up in random countries, some of whom went to local schools and befriended mostly local people, but still weren't sudanese or whatever.

the people who surround you growing up shape you. not your nation-state as such.

I can assure you this isn't the case. Ireland perhaps not so much, but that's literally because their culture is more similar to ours. As someone who lives abroad I can assure you, if you grew up here, you would be a different person. When you start learning a language and start understanding what the people around you are saying, you realise that their entire mindset is coming from a different place, they different concepts of so many things from principles to trivial things. There's always exceptions to the rule but no matter how much of a connection you'll have with someone on the other side of the planet, you'll also have massive differences in so many things.

>Is there moveability within departments?
Yes, especially in the FS. You'll probably do each of your placements in a different department over the 3-4 years.

>Where does it lead to?
It's fast track upskilling, the goal is that you will leave the FS as a Grade 7, which is a senior manager below the Senior Civil Service, which is equivalent to company directors.

>Is upwards promotion an easy thing or do you have to wait for the 65 year olds to die, then the 45 year olds then in 20 years you can become management?

Promotion into the SCS is limited because there are a limited amount of director roles across government. But the Fast Stream is designed to get you to a position where you're applying for those jobs when you're 30, rather than 50.

yeah that's what I meant, different versions of the same thing.

A good example here is more often than not, instead of asking if you're "ok" people will ask if you've "eaten rice" yet?

This manifests itself into the culture in different ways, such as a love of food in a different way than I've experienced before and the way the food is a social thing as there's dishes in the centre and everyone shares together. I could go on about about this one phrase that's connected throughout so many things in the culture.

i'm now going to HR to ask for a generic 'proof of employment letter' and gonna send parity that - saying its just for my personal records in case i'm applying for credit or future jobs.

As for the CTC thing, i'm going to wait for my department to get back to me with the T&Cs and the CTC. Then tell them before I do anything, i lived abroad, i have this evidence of the addresses but the university will vouch for me (because i lived on campus) - what do you think i should do before i do the thing onyl to fail it.

then i'm going to try to wrangle the start dates with the department such that i only join them in november or late october - when my contract is nearing an end anyway and so that i have ample time to give notice.
