Don't think this matters, Sicily was part of Italy for like a century in 1000 or whatever, and the entirety of Spain apart from Asturias was a part of a Muslim empires. Still, Spanish and Italians have little to no North-African admixture. South-Italians are much closer to Greeks. Which might be an explanation in and of itself.

Until the 90's, they were compensating this by devaluating the lira every now and then, making everybody in Europe buttblasted as suddenly all the markets were flooded with cheap Fiat and Benetton stuff.
