apparently during the great turkish war (1683-1699) the turks became so bad that serbian patriarch arsenios III picked up like half of serbian nation that moved to hungary during 1690. little do 99% of the serbs know that there are multiple versions of the painting, that the painting itself was created as a propaganda tool in the struggle of the church to keep the cement plant in beočin during late 19th century (against serbian socialists, not against austro-hungarian or catholic institutions), and that the great migration is pretty much invented.

The Coppi vs Bartali rivalry is probably the most famous in cycling history, and cycling was HUGE back then in Italy
In the summer of 1948 there was the failed assassination of the politician Palmiro Togliatti, with Italy trying to recover from the devastation of WWII people are in an uproar, but at the same time there's the Coppi-Bartali rivalry at the Tour de France (Bartali won), the state and the media begin to give great emphasis to the cycling news and the people's attention moves on the bicycle race forgetting political tensions
The picture is from 4 years later with Bartali on a climb without water (no water on an alpine climb in july is like a ko punch for a cyclist) and Coppi giving him a bottle of water even if they are fighting for the victory (that time Coppi won)
