The election that allowed Hitler to ultimately paved way to becoming boss-nigger (1933 March one), the Nazis and another party (that was nationalist-lite) won by a combined result of 52%--and this was after the Nazis used a bunch of intimidation tactics and censored a bunch of the rivals, and even arrested the head of the Communist party (who still managed to receive 12% of the votes). I think it's pretty fair to say that most of them didn't like him at that point, and any boast in his popularity after that or during in the war was probably out of the Government censoring the critics and only pushing positive news details to the public and restricting the information most could get. Most, however, may have not been 'miserable' before the war, but I would say most were after 1944.

My great grandparents told me it was good during peacetime (if you met the racial and political criteria of the nazis of course). They actually created a lot of job and welfare programs. Of course everything became really bad as the war dragged on.
