I just learned today, that Latin was official language of Hungary untill XIX cc.
Why didn't Hungarian became more prominent earlier?

Latin was only used by the nobility and the church. It was the official language in state administration, but the average peasant didn't know Latin.

Our language isn't mixed only because the nobility and educated people used Latin, but also because many other ethnic groups got mixed into the nation.

That's exactly my point. What does it even mean to be Hungarian?

We're Finno-Ugric but not really. We're Slavic but not really. Our ancestors were from Asia..but they weren't really our ancestors. We speak their language, own their culture, but they are dead and long gone.

What's even the point? Who is Hungarian? Some of us look German. Some of us look Slav. Some of us look French or Italian. Some look downright Nordic. A sizeable population who speaks Hungarian now are gypsies, who look like Indians.

Who are we? What is a Hungarian?

Well, it's not that unique of a thing. Just look at the Brits - who are they? There's several kind of germanic, celtic, and also frenchies mixed into them. And in a couple decades they'll be more mixed with pakis and indians as well. Obviously, they do have their regional identities, but overall GB or the UK is defined by it's history and historical self-awareness.

Same for us. What defines a Hungarian is belonging to a group with a historical continuity.

It isn't a bad thing. It just how it goes with the languages. English has 25% words from French and 25% from Latin. So what? It's still a Germanic language nonetheless.
