China is basically a captive culture that can't produce anything of value. Between harsh government censorship and an incredible tendency towards conspicuous consumption, the culture is sick.

Despite this, the far west of China is pretty cool, because it's got a lot of picturesque mountains, temples, and farming villages in places that the government and urban culture of China haven't totally destroyed yet. Gansu, Qinghai, and Sichuan provinces have a lot to offer still.
