Yeah, every little place has its own strong sense of identity that's developed in a very unique way over time what with our history of different peoples settling in different places - The Celts, the Romans, the Danes, The Anglos, the Normans... and accents definitely mark people out so it's easy to tell if someone's even from outside like a 10 mile radius of where you're from. People from the South usually can't tell the different North East accents apart very well, but someone from here will be able to pick out where someone else local is from almost to GPS co-ordinates.

Well my favourite local banter is how we call people from Hartlepool "monkey hangers" because of a story that a French ship sank off the coast during the Napoleonic Wars and the only survivor who made it to the shore was the ship's monkey mascot. Who they then promptly tried and hung because they thought it was a Frenchman as they'd never seen one before.

Rio Grande do Sul is considered a 'gay state', as when they started to send their kids to study in Europe (second half of XIXth century), they returned quite different than they used to be (people there were somewhat brutish). This was used by the other states to make fun of them.
Funny enough, their residents consider themselves the most masculine of people in Brazil.

People from São Paulo never shuts up about being the 'Brazil's locomotive' and how their taxes never return as public services in equal measure. Albeit both could be said to be true, they make a scene of it. They're less receptive of others too, minding their own business.

Rio de Janeiro, on the other hand, couldn't be more different. Most of them are the stereotypical Brazilian people out there knows - laidback, optimistic and gregarious. However, they are the champions of what we call 'jeitinho brasileiro', which means improvisation is king and if you can rip off others for your own gain, you will do it.

Minas Gerais is the state of the 'wary people'. It's hard to rip off a 'mineiro', as they always think someone will try to scam them. But they're nice and their homes cozy.

Bahia is known as the 'lazy state'.Even if it's not true at all, there are many, many jokes about it. Their people are generally nice. They don't care much about hygiene, though (Salvador, its capital, is known as the 'Piss Capital').

Ceará is a well of comedians - many of our most famous humorists came from there. People joke they have square-y heads.

The other states are simply too much alike one of those I mentioned or just irrelevant.

In Argentina it is Buenos Aires vs the rest of the country, which is called "El Interior" that means The Inland territory.

Buenos Aires and the rest of the country were separated for 10 years (they were called Estado de Buenos Aires y Confederación Argentina). And Argentina was in an on and off civil war between Buenos Aires and the rest of the country from the 1820s to 1880.

Buenos Aires is the capital of Argentina because it lost a war against the rest of Argentina, and it had its main city taken away by the national state.

Mexico is very complicated. Northerners (Chihuahua, Sonora and Nuevo Leon mostly) have a superiority complex and want to be americans. People from the center (Mexico City and Mexico State) think the rest of the country is a shithole. Everyone hates Oaxaca and Guerrero because everything apart from the coast is barbaric. I am from Yucatán, and people here have a superiority complex even though the rest of the country makes jokes about us. We make jokes about the people from Campeche. We also used to be independent and have a lot of regional pride.

From what I've seen it's much the same in France, you get outside the major cities and the rural areas and small towns are really nice. Thankfully we haven't started doing the Sweden/Germany thing yet and bussing immigrants into small towns and villages to make sure everyone is culturally enriched. Housing shortages can sometimes be a good thing.

there isn't much regionalism going on here because the communications have always been poor until the 20th century and people have moved en masse to the cities

im from south-karelia, the south-eastern region pointed by the arrow and the only regional rivalry that we have is with savo, the region circed in red. traditionally people from savo are mocked for their hillbilly dialect and they are commonly held as dishonest people who talk too much

strangely though there is pretty much nothing going on between us and north karelia, the region east of savo. mostly because it's the most rural shithole region in all of finland (after kainuu of course) and the people in there who call themselves karelians dont even speak our karelian dialect

Basically, in France, we all have those jokes about "that neighbouring rural region who's full of inbred people".
Near Toulouse, it'll be Ariege (with all the jokes that come with it like "if your parents get a divorce, do they still remain brother and sister ?"). In the North, the Chtis get a lot of that as well.
There are also rivalry between big cities with the friendly banter that comes with it :
- Toulouse and Bordeaux (Toulousain say "we piss in the Garonne and the Bordelais drink it."
- Paris and Marseille ("What's the capital of Maghreb ? Marseille" )
- Lyon and St-Etienne

Much like in Spain, everyone here shits on the capital and they return the favor to us.
