Better yet: Ask for "sweet tea" and when they bring it out, demand to know why it isn't iced.

>Dooryard
Whoa, never heard that term used before.
Is that just generally in Canada or more of a specific region (like bagged milk)?

>>74639623
I don't live in New England, but it's entirely possible in some areas I'd think. I don't believe they do, however, since it seems to be a predominately British definition of garden as a yard.
>>
>>74639635
what the fuck is wrong with you and that upside down shit? noone in Europe thinks about Australia being upside down
>>
>>74639623
No, it's just called a yard, but along the Canadian border Mainers call it a dooryard. In America and Canada a garden refers to a specially planted area , like an herb garden, flower garden (more commonly a flower-bed), or a vegetable garden. A fruit garden is an orchard.

t. Lived in New England before moving to Canada

>>74639697
we don't think about the non-anglosphere anyway
>>
>>74639664
Dooryard might be regional. It's used in the Maritimes, not sure what they call it out west. Dooryard is used in Downeast and Northern Maine too.

It seems Australians call it a yard, too.

New Englander here. It's just yard unless we are being specific then it's backyard, front yard or sometimes side yard. Of we are just talking about grass then we say lawn. I'm assuming the concept of yard/garden didn't even exist when we split, people lived on farms, villages or in cities.
>>
>>74639841
Yes, flower garden is a normal phrase throughout Canada and the USA, but it refers to an area of planted flowers. Brits call the whole yard a garden, as in even the grassy area with nothing but grass or bushes planted in it.

Whereabouts in Maine were you? I'm from there originally.
>>
>>74639623
People have gardens in their yard

>>74639753
>Dunno about kiwis but I can't imagine them
They call it a hobbit plot.
>>
>>74639931
Mostly seaside: Kittery, Kittery Point, York
>>
>>74639892
Oh yeah and a garden is where you are growing things you'd call by name like flower garden, rose garden or a vegetable garden. If you just say garden most people would assume a vegetable garden.
