Not too long ago
It was created as a splinter from /pol/

Because of the US Elections, a heap of redditors and non-/pol/acks started shitposting on /pol/ and made the content of the board absolute trash.
About 40% of all threads in the catalog weren't even politics related
Another 40% were just very shit quality threads
The last 20% were threads that started off well but quickly got derailed


/bant/ was made as a response to that, it was meant to be a place all the shitposters on /pol/ could migrate to, unfortunately the issue is that the mods refuse to actually enforce the rules on /pol/ so unless you post a "HOW WILL WHITE MEN EVER COMPETE" thread, no matter how shit your thread is, it won't be deleted

Pol can easily be saved. The mods just need to start enforcing the rules like they did once upon a time. You'd need a team of at least 5 guys to enforce the rules. Constantly banning and deleting any shitposting. Not just threads, but deleting individual posts that are trash.

Take a look at 8/pol/. Their board is great and is very much like what our /pol/ was a few years ago. Shitposting is minimal, but a joke can still be taken, and no shills and off-topic posts
