You can't just leave the middle east alone. Russia and the US inherited this problem from the old world hegemons (France, Britain, etc) who colonized and carved up the region into a series of highly-volatile nation-states. One of them even has nuclear capabilities and another is getting close to having them.

Once we're gone, whoever the next world hegemon is will probably have to deal with them too.

Sykes and Picot went full absolute madman but it's not like the USA has helped a lot. From the Suez crisis to Savak to Zia ul-Haq, the USA has done a lot of harm.

It's sad that reactionaries won. Muslim majority countries were very progressive under Nasser, Ben Bella, Bhutto, Sankara, Taraki, etc. Let's not forget that free love hippies used to cross Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan with their VW vans, which is impossible in modern times.
