IIRC the Chinese actually refer to the Kims as fattys (fatty the first, second, third.) The Chinese people in general seem to think the communist party should abandon the norks as they have become a liability. As a matter of fact I think they've been censoring, although less than normal, insults to the Kims.

The norks were supported as a buffer zone and a way to keep SK split. But after a certain point, the risks overtake the rewards.

NK is unreliable and destabilizing. China can't say it openly, but they know we have every reason to maintain a military presence and THAAD there with the norks and their belligerence. They're being seen more and more of a liability by the Chinese, including the leadership.

A unified South Korea would make an excellent trading partner, and although it would be in Americas sphere, relations could quickly normalize with kimmy out of the picture.

It helps NK get money. It improves relations between the states. Actually makes them talk to each other instead of having the US or China being the only one who has any contact with NK.
Pushes back NK artillery that is pointed at Seoul.
Did I say it strongly improves the inter Korean relations.
Medium sized biz from SK strongly benefit from it.

Controversial because it helps NK. Down people believe starving NK will cause it's collapse. Weird to think as NK is probably the most stable dictatorship in the world.
