Carolinas probably because they were like sister colonies under some or named after some Caroline. Dakotas I'm not really sure. West Virginia broke away during our Civil War in 1863 because that part of Virginia was for the Union

The two Virginias were because it split during the Civil War into pro union and pro confederate areas
Two Carolinas is because in colonial times North Carolina was devoid of many rich plantation aristocrats and filled with rowdy freedom loving sustenance farmers who didn't want to be under the colonial government controlled by said aristocrats in South Carolina, so they split peacefully by the king (I think it was the king)
The two Dakotas is because of gerrymandering, why have 2 senators when there can be 4?
