Why do we Japanese who love America the most can't speak English well?
>>
Our languages are too different
>>
separated by sea
bound by fate
(the nipponiose gf)
>>
We adopted some western cultures because we needed the western inventions but I think Japan needs to be Japanese. Look at Germany and France
We pretend to be friend with America because we need allies against China and Korea. And we need to export goods.

Not everybody needs to learn English language
>>
>>74477350
The first thing Japanese people are shocked to trying to learn English is that there is only one word" I " expresses myself. Since Americans are ignorant, they are seriously thinking that other languages are primitive. One of evidence to show it is only Americans who are laughing at the fact that Japanese people don't distinguish between L and R, although phonemic differences are only relative.Distinguishing phonemes is relativistic by culture, but Americans are serious thinking that it is universal for humans to distinguish between L and R. What naive pls.

doesnt matter. what matters is exposure to english language and japan doesnt have that enough since theyre culturally self sufficient. which is pretty admirable in this modern global world
>>
>>74478224
This. Only people who have to deal with foreigners should speak English fluently, otherwise it's a slippery slope to full-scale McDonaldization.
>>
>>74477523
You "pretend" to be "friends" with America because it's embarrassing to admit that you're a vassal/colony. It's okay, my country has the same problem. But if we don't admit the problem, we will not be able to solve it.

I see a huge push by educationalists and foreigners in Japan that schools need to boost general English and foreign-language education. The notion that it should be a specialist skill, reserved for those who choose to commit to it, is ill-received in such circles, but I suspect matches the common-sense of most Japanese.

>L and R
Are meaningless symbols. In English, "R" can be anything from various vowels, to silent, to retroflex approximant (various variants), to alveolar approximant (various variants), to postalveolar approximant (various variants). With all of those having voiceless and voiced versions too.

"L" has even more potential sounds.

These sounds differ from word-to-word and dialect-to-dialect. The reason Japanese and many have trouble with distinguishing them is because the only different between L and R sounds is that R generally has the tongue further back and L generally has the tongue further forward. All sounds in both are approximants.

Japanese doesn't contain any of these sounds. They have a postalveolar flap (which many might ignorantly identify as a flapped or badly-spoken version of this non-existent "R" concept) but it isn't approximant.

I personally can't tell the audible difference between vowels that don't appear in English. Everyone has sounds they can't distinguish from others. Does that mean we are all stupid aliens? No, it's just what sounds you're familiar with.

It's because you can't speak english that you love the US more than any other.

Why do the weebs who love Japan the most can't speak Japanese well?
>>
>>74477597
Japanese people are unable to pronounce any other language. Japanese has only around 200 syllables and the language isn't even atonal. Japanese is heavily pitch accented and is often spoken on a higher pitch.

For comparisan, english and german both have over 10000 distinct syllables.

Is that why people like France?

I think they can learn Hawaiian if they try (although it's useless), Hawaiian has a even simpler phonology.
>>
>>74478629
Sorry. i should have also said we had no choice because we lost the war.
>>
You treat English the same way we treat Spanish, you learn it in school and then promptly forget all of it.
>>
The answer is geography. Even though it's the age of globalization, some countries need to know English less than others. Japan is the best example for this.

Let's take Europe for example: everyone lives close to each other, you can travel freely, it's easy to meet people from different countries. They kind of have to know English at least on a basic level - the geography itself forces them to learn it.
Then compare it to the isolated island that has its own strong national feeling (Japan) - they simply don't need English that much.

Actually, Russia suffers from the same problem but it's isolated both politically and geographically - most of our neighbors speak Russian, we can't travel freely and, well, we have plenty of content in Russian, so we don't feel obligated to learn an international language. That's why csgo became known as the place for autistic Russians.

With time this won't be a problem, I guess, though I'm not sure if English should be the language that dominates others - I kind of like French and German more.

From those who claims knowledge of at least one language: English in Russia 80% "Can speak freely"

I was surprised at how many people spoke English in Moscow.

Languages with lots of consonants and syllables are not refined and sound primitive. Romans thought german pls speaked like a noisy bird on thier language.

Only Americans are showing off their ignorance in their movie.
>>
>>74479262
Not really. You only say this because your native language is Japanese. Japanese inherents it's phonology from earlier in language history, and from less conflated languages. So it's more simplistic.

Having more or less doesn't make it better or worse. It just is, as is.
>>
>>74479413
Languages with plenty of plosive and fricative sounds need to be in good harmony with vowels. Otherwise it sounds musically.I think that it is why Latin languages such as Italian and Portuguese languages are more soft and beautiful to hear.
>>
>>74479591
As a Japanese speaker, does English sound Germanic or a mix of many?
>>
>>74479262
>Languages with lots of consonants and syllables are not refined and sound primitive

Please stop making me laugh, watch videos of Amazonas indians and they speak a similar language to you asians. Seriously your language sounds very very similar to the language of primitive tribes from all over the world, whenever I listen to japanese speak I can't help but think when we were kids speaking as if we were indians just doing random sounds that sounded dumb and from the stone age.

The fact that your writing sistem is literally drawings also shows how primitive your language is.
>>
>>74479616
To be honest, I don't dislike the sound of English. It don't sound neither Germanic nor Swedish like,
Is sounds to me nneutralized French by excluding musical softness.

There are several factors
The languages are incredibly different for starters, both in writing and grammar
But I think the most important factor is culture. Japanese cultural scene is vibrant and plentiful, focused on home market, and there is enough people to worth the price for dubbing of any imported film, series, videogames... Even if half the words used nowadays are loans in katakana, it's still not english. You're still speaking and listening and reading and writing in Japanese.

Take Finns for example, they too have a weird language, excellent education , but since they have no culture whatsoever, they spend their time listening and reading in english since nobody translate shit for a country of not even 6 millions.
