Secondly, why are you asking me? I'm not the guy who decided for Australia to have 6 states.

Because nobody wanted a main government, or "king". At first it was the thirteen colonies, all controlled by the British. After the Revolution, more people went out to gain more territories for themselves, forming "states".

Eventually the idea of a constitution came up. After the defeat of England, the states ratified the "Articles of the Confederation" which allowed for a confederation to take place.

The constitution began failing as more and more states were being made, as everything began getting out of control.

America realized that they needed a strong, central government so they made the current constitution in 1788, where each state still had their own powers, but now answered to the central government (Congress, Supreme Court and the President)

Super quick answer is that North america had a lot of different settlers and explorers come over from the old world to claim land. Mainly from France, Spain, and England. Each settlement was labelled as a separate colony, pretty soon England had like 13 or something colonies. Then a war broke out between the French (allied with Native Americans) and the British. The French lost so then they got kicked out of the (not yet United State's) colonies and Canada, then French territories became British ruled land. The French lost the war so hard that England was able to take over the Spanish territory as well, which is our southern states along the golf coast. Then the revolutionary war happened and the colonies declared independence from England. The leaders of the colonies then decided to set up a new government (because strength in numbers) and became the United States.

In some alternate universe each colony would have become it's own country and North America would have been a complete cluster fuck.

Then we had the civil war and castrated the states :^)
Then we had the New Deal and castrated them further :^)))
Now basically all the power is concentrated in the federal government and states are mostly just there for ease of administration.
