As for former ostbloc - after the fall of communist regimes pro western governments got in power, privatized everything to foreign investors and since then people here are just slaves of foreign companies who work hard to keep their wages as low as possible, even by importing additional people. And governments (from right to left) are collaborating with them.

In short - central europe is nothing but a supply of cheap workforce and market for trash western goods. It was planned exactly like that and I cant see it changing in foreseeable future, because majority of people is stupid and is even actively getting brainwashed.

The thing with Hungary, and other ex-commie countries is that there simply isn't enough money flowing through the economy to put them on par with West Europe. Aid money helps, but the best strategy is to encourage foreign investment into hiring local workers, like how Suzuki has successful plants.
