The US was extremely paranoid about anything remotely left wing, Arbenz wasn't communist, neither were the Sandanistas, nevertheless they were portrayed as such by the United States and overthrown brutally. Even Salvador Allende, who perhaps was a socialist, but certainly no Marxist-Leninist, was democratically elected posed no threat to the US. All of these movements were democratically elected and were reactions to very legitimate grievances against the oligarchal regimes that were often brought to power with US aid (the 14 families of El Salvador being the most extreme example). Instead of embracing democratic governance and economic justice it immediately tried to isolate and discredit those governments, then overthrow them via military action. In the end Latin America was of little consequence to Soviet power or the end of the cold war, which had much more to do with oil prices and the arms race than guerillas in El Salvador.
