That's because you're a Chink. Chinks are always delusional on their spoken English proficiency. You speak and listen to the familiar Singlish sing-song Chink influenced way of speaking. Learn to listen for key words. Look at their faces and body language for context. Kiwis are just normal people. Start by joining teams with Kiwis during group assignment. Immerse yourself in their cadence and try to mimic the pattern for short sentences. Pick up their admittedly daft catchphrases (in my time it was sweet as, yeah nah etc). Use it in conversation. Join the uni student activity and burn a couch or two but don't get caught. Good luck.
