Nah. I lived across the street from campus in a university-owned apartment building. Got a little studio all to myself.

No. Most European universities have their faculties planted all over the city centre so students usually rent a room in a house/apartment together with other students.

You always pay more if you want your own sanitary/cooking island. But I don't mind sharing those with other people, it's part of the expierence of living together

My room/apartment on campus is alright.
It's small but has everything I need besides a shower (shared one down the hall).

I lived in the dorms at Wayne State University in Detroit for three years.

It was pretty okay- for one thing, the campus police are renowned for being better than the City of Detroit's PD, so I always felt safe in the dorms. On the other hand, it was still Detroit and people are insane, so I remember someone setting off fireworks in the hall once and we all had to evacuate the building because of the resulting small fire.
