Is there any real difference between 昨年 and 去年? Or is it just like saying "last year, I..." and "a year ago, I..."?
Also, if you pronounce the 月 in 毎月 like "maigetsu" will people still get what you mean? That's not say making the mistake is fine, just that if you do, people still get the meaning.

>>73787277
>just "getsu"
To mean "every month"? Probably no, but we might be able to guess it from the context.
As for 去年 and 昨年, the latter sounds a little more formal.
>>73787466
Yes. I meant that if I say "maigetsu watashi ha
oya no uchi ni ikimasu" instead of "maitsuki," I assumed people would still be able to understand.
>As for 去年 and 昨年, the latter sounds a little more formal.
I see, that's interesting. Thank you. I was expecting it to be the other way around since I've heard people say 昨年 but never 去年.
>>73787668
きょねん is definitely more conversational.
We tend to avoid "maigetsu" though.
Perhaps it's because "getsu" in a date often means "Monday(getsu-youbi)."
>>73787882
>きょねん is definitely more conversational.
I see. I'll try to keep that in mind. Up until now I've used 昨年 because it was easier to remember and I thought the two were entirely synonymous.
>We tend to avoid "maigetsu" though.
Perhaps it's because "getsu" in a date often means "Monday(getsu-youbi)."
I didn't think of that, actually. But that only makes me more confused on a similar subject:
Obviously I don't have the full picture of words that include -getsu or -tsuki, but from what I've learned so far 半月 and 毎月 are both pronounced as -tsuki instead of -getsu, but if you want to avoid possibly confusing it for Monday, why are 昨月 and 来月 pronounced getsu?
Of course if you DO want to talk about "last Monday" I assume you'd say 先の月(曜日) but I still don't get why -getsu is even used for anything but Monday if you'd like to avoid potential confusion.
Of course, I'm really just curious about for what (if any) reason this might be, rather than angry about it.

You have a point on this. It may be just my personal preference.
I avoid 昨月 and use 先月(せんげつ)more because it's more conversational and easier to pronounce.
来月 is both conversational and appropriate for writing as well.
Anyway, we almost always say not just getsu
but getsu-you(-bi) to mean Monday.

Oh right, I forgot to mention 先月, I'd forgotten all about it.
Sometimes it's hard for me to remember certain time-specific words. I confuse 明日 and 昨日 a lot, and 先月 is also a little confusing since I've been taught 先 on its own means ahead/first, so even though I know 来月 fulfills the job of meaning "next month" I still need a moment to remember the 先 in 先月 means LAST month.
>Anyway, we almost always say not just getsu but getsu-you(-bi) to mean Monday.
I figured, but I want to learn the words properly so I don't embarrass myself when trying to speak the language. Do people use 金 as shorthand for Friday though? Or is it only common to refer to the days of the week by their first kanji if you're having a really casual conversation, be it through speech or text?

I can't think of any situation where I say just 金 to mean a day of the week. It constitutes a part of a word, like 花金.
It's not very common to say just 月火水木金土日. 曜 usually comes with them.
I understand 先 is confusing, but it works like "before" in English. You use the word like "in front of" as well as "in the past."
>>73791916
>I can't think of any situation where I say just 金 to mean a day of the week. It constitutes a part of a word, like 花金.
>It's not very common to say just 月火水木金土日. 曜 usually comes with them.
I see. I guess that means I should stop looking out for that and always assume 金 on its own is read かね or きん. Thank you.
>I understand 先 is confusing, but it works like "before" in English. You use the word like "in front of" as well as "in the past."
I don't think I quite understood what you meant. Do you mean that that the English word "before" is also ambiguous like that and could mean "a past event" or "in front of" (like "the day in front of us" to describe the word "tomorrow" in a really strange way) and that same ambiguity exists in Japanese (without obvious context of course) as well? That makes me feel a bit better about it. I'll try to think of 先 as "before" from now on. I know 前(に) exists and specifically means in front of, but "before" feels more like it fits the ambiguous nature of 先 than "ahead/first" which is only ambiguous because it's 2 entirely different words and could mean either of the two depending on the context and not because it's one word that has a dual meaning.

I'm pretty sure 前 can mean before in relation to the past. In any case, does this deep digging really help you learn? Really interested, for me the English language just seemed to come naturally from consuming media, if only Japanese was that easy

>>73792646
>I'm pretty sure 前 can mean before in relation to the past. In any case, does this deep digging really help you learn?
I know that, but I meant "in front of" in the literal sense. I guess a better English analog to 前(に) referring to physical things in front of you would be "in front of." Not better by much, but I guess the concepts are just too similar.
>In any case, does this deep digging really help you learn?
A bit. I've asked about different words a few times, the last one I asked about was if there was any practical difference between 夕食 / 夕飯 / 版ごはん since in essence they all mean dinner and I was wondering if one of them was just more "right" or used more often than the others.
>For me I feel like it gets clear for that time, but then you generally forget the specifics.
I don't quite know what you mean by that. I've been casually listening to Japanese via exposure to anime and similar things for about 8 years, so while I'm far from being able to speak the language, I have a general feel for how words sound, how the grammar should be, and I obviously need to know that concept compounding is what makes kanji work.
>Your English seems pretty good, did you learn by this dissecting method also?
Thanks. Dissecting method? You mean learning what each individual kanji means and how it reads, then being able to piece words together as you learn new ones?
Not particularly. I'm doing the old 2k/6k Anki deck to expand my vocabulary at the moment, and other than finding a dictionary and meticulously learning the definition of each kanji on a page-by-page basis I don't know a way to learn individual kanji and apply it retroactively to new words.
>Really interested, for me the English language just seemed to come naturally from consuming media, if only Japanese was that easy
Ditto. But it does help a ton. My main problem at the moment is the grammar even though in theory it is kind of simple.

>His whole life is before him.
Personally I would never interpret that as someone experiencing their past. "You have your whole life before you" sounds like what you tell someone who's considering suicide and needs to be cheered up. For someone who's experiencing the past of his life you COULD say that, but in one context there's a better way to express it ("his life is flashing before his eyes") and the other case only makes sense in an instance like, say, an old person discovers a lot of relics from his youth lying around in his attic and he gets sentimental over it.

I have a question regarding the educational system of Japan.
Mostly the curriculum.
Here we have these reading assignments where the kid has to read a book (usually a hungarian one) and then they write notes on it and in the end they take a test on the subject, themes and story of the book.
Ia this the same over in Japan?
If so,what books are assigned?

Question to those that have traveled to Japan. How much did you spend in your vacations on transportation, food, a place to sleep, etc?
Sorry for bad english
>>73806209
Japan can be cheap. Ignoring flights, 10,000 yen/day is easily doable, depending on how many different areas you want to visit. If you don't mind hostels or living like a bum (I do mind both), then you can go even cheaper.
Of course, once you factor in activities, shopping, giving yourself a treat or more comfort, the cost will go up. I guess 300,000 yen all-up for a fortnight, again without flights, would get you a pleasant but not glamorous holiday.

んんアラスカでオヒョウがよく食べた。トラウトやレッドスナッパやティラピアも通常。東南部でカットフィシュは人気と思う。
でもサーモンが一番好き

どう日本人は「My English is bad」と言うの?
「の英語が悪いだ」とですか?
>>73809127
>悪いだ
これは駄目よ
You can't use だ after an い-adjective.
I don't think you'd say 私の英語 because that sounds like you own the language. I also don't think you use 悪い for a lack of skill. 私は英語が下手 is probably what you want.

Maybe if you're a level 50 wizard hacker. If you're just a dime a dozen codemonkey probably not.
I'll make the next thread at 310.

I don't let it go away just because Remy the newbie thinks it's stupid.

Welp, a bunch of posts got nuked and we're back under the bump limit. Let's bring it to 310.

Heh, so someone's making a ton of threads using the same image as mine to try to get it deleted. Seems like a good way to get the mods against this thread. Good job. :^)
