Before the first world war German was still very widespread among the German-American population. There were German-speaking schools, sports associations and major publications, even the first newspaper reporting on the Declaration of Independence was German-speaking.

Showing your German heritage in public marked you as an enemy(there are even documented lynchings) that they hid and surpressed the language due to social governmental pressure.
