That's odd, why kill something that worked well. Perhaps there was not enough demand for traveling by train. In this country we do have trains but there is very little demand so long distance trains are ridiculously expensive (and slow!) so it is cheaper to fly.

Trains gave lost at that time, due to economics problems in the 80's after the military coup all the industries were pretty much in bankrupt so there was almost nothing to transport, in this country it was a way to connect all the interior so it was an efficient and necessary cost, but the goverment didn't give a shit and privatized all the state companies replacing them with services so we can maintain the currency at the same level as the dollar. Of course, all this landed in the default in 2001.
