They play different.
They're usually pretty slow to make progress in, repetitive by nature and usually include some simple "spreadsheet"-game element so you can take even more time with the game.

Their games primarily cater two audiences:
People with a strict daily routine who see the game as a good value proposition, and people who play games all day.

Not all of Japanese games are crap, but very disheartening when you look at the top 50 games chart of any week in Japan. Too many dating games, sex games, little sister games, people sims, school simulators, variations of RPG and so on.

I remember years ago, used to look at their chart with envy, but now I see Western developed games in the Japanese chart as their saving grace!

Playing mgr revengeance now. It's cool but platinum games will always fail at representing overpowered badass heroes, since they insist on making their games too hard to be smooth and feel like you are really the man. Even Ninja Blade was better at this.

Probably because Japs think more about creative worlds, characters and gameplay.
While a lot of western developers only think about "muh story", "muh jrafigs" and "mu immurshun", while completely ignoring that their game is either completely bland or has bad gameplay.

because the west realizes there is no point putting effort in the quality of video games, since they will always be just toys for children and not anywhere near real media
