As for the population it could have completely realistically been 10 000 people or even 20 000 if you compare it to the population changes in neighboring countries. The point is that a even 20 000 people would have been miniscule compared to the amounts of people living in southern sweden and denmark.

As for any bigger permanent settlements would have still been inland and not on the coast do to all the piracy and raiding. They probably had specific trading spots where goods from scandinavia and mainland europe were traded for furs and such. This is all based on the majority of viking era cremation spots being found in inland in south finland which imply permanent settlements.

Of course this is all guess work, but it would explain why there are only 3 confirmed mentions of mainland finns in norse runestones. The populations were very small and inland so contact was mostly limited to trading.

Of course I'm not denying that there were no settlements at all on the coast during the entirety of the iron age, coasts and deltas are natural places for settlements to form, but the bigger trend over the hundreds and hundreds of years seems to be inland settlements, because everyone from scandis to slavs to baltics to even finns were raiding the baltic sea coasts. Again it's hard to make general statements considering how long of a period in time the finnish iron age was. The fact remains that bronze and iron working were surprisingly advanced even in finland and there are more than enough knives, swords and jewelry to go around to prove it. Also merovingian era jewelery is the closest thing finns have to a completely unique cultural heritage.

As for the trading spots I'd guess a good measure for how the trading spots were situated would be the merchant cross exhibit in the national museum that has all the locations where crosses worn by traders who dealt with christian foreigners have been found. From what I remember the crosses started to appear some time in the later iron age (800-1050) so their locations would probably equate more or less with later trading spots. I'll have to take a picture of the map when the prehistoric wing opens again.

When our elementary school system was reformed in 1970's the original plan was to make English the only mandatory foreign language, but the fennoswede party threatened to leave the government if Swedish didn't get included, so it stuck.
