Finally reached the 1000 vocab mark (~500 kanji) but I haven't started reading anything besides practice sentences from a grammar book.
When should I start reading books?

You have the vocabulary of an elementary school student. Read something more advanced once you've studied a bit more, the 1000 vocab mark doesn't mean anything.
2000 is something, you can try to read some basic stuff with translations available to check if your own translation is right.
6000 is about the mark for reading with only having to look up about one word per sentence.
10000 is pretty comfortable reading, but if it's comfortable you don't learn anything new so you should start earlier.

You're doing something very wrong. Babby's first foreign language?

I dont get what you are saying moon and star flag

No problem.
You should probably still start reading as soon as possible though, even if you have to look up a lot of words.
Since the Anki core 2K deck consists of words mined from newspapers, you should try those if you think yotsubato is too childish.
