Yes, I'd say there is a difference, but there's differences between the other European countries as well. I think the most obvious difference between us and the mainland is that noone on the entire European continent ever laughs

In 1666 a great fire consumed down a good part of Londpn. Then during WW2 London got bombed quite a lot by the luftwaffe which resulted in more destruction of its historical parts. That could be a reason why it seems so differents from other european capitals even though difference in cultural architecture might be something adding to the rest.
London is also the capital of the country where the industrial revolution started, that must have changed its structure quite early in its history.

I've been to germany and the UK
Germany has a cold clean feeling to it. Yet it's familiar.
UK felt like like a damp version of the real world where everybody is drunk half the time.

I think that pic was from the early 2000s, there are quite a few new buildings gone up recently. Plus we have 2 financial sectors, the other is canary wharf a few miles away.

This, partly. It's quite strange when you come across bits that weren't bombed or redeveloped, there's a place around Oxford Street that's just like amsterdam, tall thin houses surrounded by much more modern stuff. Plus even when whole areas were razed to the ground we kept the old street layout and just built in the same places, quite unlike the mainland. It's partly to do with the victorians though, and how much of a mess they made.
