What is the Japanese underclass like? Do you have rednecks? Japs all seem so intelligent and driven to succeed, so who are the people who clean toilets and drive transport trucks? In the west some people sort of look down on those workers, but in Japan they must be totally ostracized and seen as sub-human.

the chinese and some blacks who wash up there

They are an extreme minority monkey.

The underclass are just the poor Japanese who are invisible. A job is a job.
>>
>>73103728
But what are they like? In other parts of the world we have rednecks, bogans, bydlos etc. Do the Japs have an equivalent?
>>
>>73103549
They all speak weird, and say "aboot" instead of "about"
>>
Brazilian immigrants, probably

The whole Eta discrimination that still happens to this day is really shocking imo.
It's their own fucking kind doing the shit jobs, why give them shit for doing what you don't want to do?
>>
dumb, uneducated, drink and smoke a lot

still a lot more polite than western underclass

The only rednecks are those people from Osaka. Maybe yanki from Ibaraki prefecture.

Retired old men clean toilets generally - janitor isn't really a profession on the whole in the way you'd imagine. There's also no stigma for driving a truck (although there is some controversy going on lately with a major delivery company telling their workers to get parking tickets to improve delivery speed/efficiency).

As far as homeless, Japanese people think they choose to be homeless, rather than the Western idea of "deserving" to be homeless, or unfortunately becoming homeless through external circumstances. They're generally left alone and do their own thing; I've only been approached by one homeless once, asking for money in English, and she was more than likely mentally ill.

It's sensationalism, never trust articles you read about Japan if it comes from a "writer" who contributes to Forbes, Vice or BBC. Tney will always be written in a way that's focused on appealing to the narrative Westerners want to hear (i.e.- secret racism! Oh Japan, you're so crazy!)

Basically this.
That being said, some sort of workers that tend to be looked down on in the West aren't really objects of contempt here, because Japan has a long tradition of 'Shokunin culture' that (at least ostensibly) thinks highly of those who mastered his trade.

Actually, this is a bit complicated issue. Certainly people who lived by butchers and some other occupations were classified as Eta that was the second lowest caste during pre modern period, but they didn't really lived in misery; lots of Etas were pretty wealthy because they had a monopoly on their trade in the region, even though their social class was considered very low.

Thing is, after modernization especially after WW2, with those monopolies that remain largely unchanged, many affirmative actions, ranging from subsidies for their neighborhoods, to offering cushy (yet menial) jobs in municipally operated businesses, have also been taken in the name of human rights, and those 'privileges' came to be vested rights for them. So, they need to peddle/exaggerate discrimination towards them to make the affirmative action kept, while younger generations don't give a shit about it (most people just consider the issue to be in the realm of history). This is why these stories, often played by shills, must be taken with a grain of salt today.

Isn't that most of the population? You have a false and skewed impression of Japan. Something like 66% of the population has non-full time, non-secure jobs. They have temporary work, they strive for permanent work but then when they get permanent work they have to spend long and horrible hours facing rampant power abuse from superiors. Being Japanese seems horrible OP.

It's an Aussie who lives in Japan, does drifting and interacts with drifters/racer/car people. Apparently "jimnying" is a thing.
