Because we're smart enough to tell if something meant to describe a thing in general or this particular thing. Most of the times it's obvious from the context, thus using articles is counterintuitive for us.

For example:
>please put bottle in fridge
We're already in the kitchen, we both see the fridge, and it's clear as day what bottle I want in the fridge. There's no need to clarify things further.

We do have words for "this" and "that" and "one", but we don't put them before every noun just cause.
