For example I'm going to try and go into officer school shortly and I may be wrong, but I think the bare minimum is 5 years, plus additional time if you have a specific job or duty.

For example if you wanted to be a Naval fighter pilot you do your training which is typically 1-2 years. If you pass then you are in the service for a minimum of 8 years. So basically a decade.

Same with Special forces. I believe you have to give 6-8 years after already passing all the schools.

But that goes back into the specialization thing brought up. The military is so massive that it exists as it's own "company" in many ways. There are doctors, lawyers, chefs, technicians. Not just guys with guns.

You have to become weapons qualified and you go through basic like everyone else but what you actually do in the military can vary on the full spectrum of the private sector.

Also I don't know how it is in the Balkans but a huge component of the American military is the reserves. Longer contracts ( I believe 8 years) but you basically go and train at a base twice a month on the weekends and you are only called in for real service during war time.

If you have a civilian job though that job is locked in.
You can get hired as a CEO of a company and if the military send you a letter saying "Hey we need you for two years" you still have that private sector job when you get back. Otherwise you are going to legal battle with the full force of the U.S. government.
