Being Spaniard we switched to beer, but it was the alchol of choice for everyone until not so long ago, wine. People still drinks lots of it mixed with sodas (something it seems to trigger old frenches and Italians for some reason), fuit juice or alone. For example my Grandad when he was alive drank one or two glasses of Tinto every day (during dinner and some times for supper to relax watching Star Treck or Galactica) and was a plumber. I have a hard time understanding Europeans in general. The culture is just so bizarre. All the men are so incredibly effeminate - going for morning runs in some kind of garment that is only a step above a speedo. Same goes for swimming in which case they actually do wear a speedo. Masculinity just doesn't seem to be a thing over there. I also find that petty confrontations are more commonplace over there - things like parking or line cutting etc.... just normal things that would get you shot over here. It's kind of comforting in a way because when I go visit I just feel like I am the shit. I can break the law and know nothing bad would happen because everyone is a pussy (even the police lol)
