how many words should I be learning each day from the deck? 20 per day seems hard to remember
>>
>>72945428
Learning from a deck is a bad way to learn because each word is learned the same way. Put yourself in different situations so you get stronger memories and learn the words better. You will forget most of what you learn anyway, so do as much as you can.

Trying to learn so and so many words every day is the dumbest thing you can do.

You sound like a beginner so I don't know if you know about this concept but you will probably forget and relearn words several times before you can remember them well. That's why things like anki exist.

Say you "learn" 20 words per day, and forget 15 of them next week, then the number of words you have to learn each day will start to rise to a larger and larger number, soon you're at 200 words per day just to not forget what you've already learned.

豚肉カツ丼とチキンカツ丼とどちのほうが一番通常?
>>
>>72945428
It's not really that hard to remember because many words are related. Ie., the use the same kanji which carries the same general idea. If you grasp the idea, it gets much easier. Then again, >>72945835 is right. You will forget a lot of what you've learned, so it's best to start reading as soon as you can so that you encounter kanji in the wild. Context will help you retain the knowledge.
>>

Try adding an extra step for new cards at >30 minutes or so, I think it's difficult to memorise kanji vocab cards with just the default <10 minute step
>>
>>72949743
This. This helps retention so much, I currently do 1 5 10 20 steps.
>>
>>72945428
Also you may want to set your learn ahead limit to 0 so that you actually get the spaced part of SRS when learning a card.

>>
how do I change fonts on desktop Anki?

>>72961394
Because Japanese took their writing system from Chinese. Most kanji have Japanese and Chinese way of reading. Some of them have multiple readings (usually the basic kanji such as 中 which has many uses depending on context).

I have a really bad cold and don't feel like going out.

There is a pharmacy just down my street that delivers medicine. Their sign is in English so I know for sure they delivery and I can get their number off google maps.

When I phone how do I properly ask them to deliver some medicine for my chest and nose congestion?

The readings in カタカナ are the 音読み, the imported readings based on how the character was pronounced in Chinese at the time. They're usually a single syllable like ちゅう or か or しん, but sometimes two when the Chinese word had a consonant on the end like -k or -ts (as in 直・チョク、ジキ、ジカ or 活・カツ). When there's more than one 音読み, it means the word was imported with different readings at different times, and they're generally classified into three different groups: 呉音、漢音、唐音 based on the time period and context. Chinese words are used in Japanese in a way similar to how Latin and Greek words are used in English, and have the same educated-sounded quality to them.

You can use the Chinese readings as nouns, as in 分, ブン or フン meaning portion or minute. They can also be combined with other words into verbs, as in 訳する, ヤクする meaning to translate, or adjectives like 凛たり, リンたり meaning cold or dignified. And they can also be combined together into compound words, either borrowed from Chinese or as new inventions by the Japanese.

The readings in ひらがな are the 訓読み, the native Japanese words that were assigned to the kanji by the Japanese. They have a much different sound to them than the one-syllable Chinese readings, as in 泉・いずみ or 源・みなもと. They can also be inflected words with okurigana endings, like 走る、早い、静か.

Not an image but a short chapter from an anthology comic. The art style was soft and warm but I couldn't really read it at the time. It was pretty long into another drunken night at the time and it took ages but I looked up most of the words to piece together what I could and by the end there were tears in my eyes but for the first time in ages it provoked a deeply buried desire for humanity. The next day I sat down and spent some time online looking for grammar guides and things like that, so it was kind of one of the straw which broke the camels back and pushed me into wanting to seriously learn the language. Up until that point I had learned the kana and how they were pronounced via an app, but it was mainly something to do on my ipod touch during lunch at work.

Reading it now still makes me smile. Should probably focus more on warm things instead of spending time around here. (´・ω・`)

I think you wrote something like "As for John, he can kiss Sarah"
>>72953215
This are also probably wrong, I'm adding some kind of a ugly literal translation:
ジョンさんがサラだけ接吻していい
"As for John, it's ok to kiss sarah"
ジョンさんが接吻していい人わサラだけ(だ・です)
"The person/people who are okay to kiss Sarah are/is only John"
>>
>>72981045
My understanding of なら is that it can be used to denote exclusivity
eg
>ひらがなならわかります
>I only understand hiragana

My guess was that 「サラさんなら接吻できる」 would therefore mean "sara is the only one who can be kissed" - so adding ジョンさんは at the start would mean "jon can only kiss sara".
Is that a valid use of なら?
I'm also not sure if using the potential form of する is correct in this situation or not. Does it depend on if it's meant to imply a capability to kiss or a rule that's being enforced?

I don't know why I'm learning Japanese anymore. My goal isn't clear, I'm not learning to read manga, watch shows or anything like that.

I just find the language very fun to learn. That's the only reason, I guess. I see the content I'll be able to understand as a bonus, not as a goal. I don't quite understand it myself.

Learning Japanese is just a hobby to me.

May be misrecalling but I'm sure somewhere in the A Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar sort of situation and the ambiguity therein is discussed. Can't find it now but off the top of my head the grammatical "rule of thumb" is that in these structures, the agent is marked with は and the affected (?) is always marked with the first に, with the location, whatever next. Meaning that the sentence couldn't arranged as
>メアリーはアパートにスティーブに来てもらった。

and still mean "Mary had Steve come to her apartment/Steve came to Mary's apartment for her."

メアリー is a dirty whore.

Japanese people here, what do you think of your writing system? Do you honestly think it's sane, adequate system? I mean, yeah, native Japanese people (probably) don't have any problems with it, but you, if you can read this post, are exposed to a language which uses much simpler system. Can you know that language can use so little characters it could fit a single keyboard, that characters in language don't really need to have at least ten strokes to be a proper character, that language can connect characters into sequences sepatated by space to represent a concept instead of inventing a new character each time and still think that Japanese is logical?
I mean, you even invented two syllabic alphabets at some point (obviously, having just one will be too straightforward for Japanese), why won't you just admit that letters are superior? I mean seriously, Japanese is a great language for cryptography (well, it would be if no one knew about hieroglyphs, because the idea to represent each concept with a new character is so ridiculous and unefficient that no person unaware of hieroglyphical writing will ever figure this out), but the idea of using it as an actual language just looks like a joke.
Of course, I am just a stupid gaijin, so surely you do have your reasons to think that your language is superior other than that it's your native language and you not wanting to admit that your native language is insane, right?

>>
>>73001889

Their cumbersome language is probably one of their last pretexts to a relatively high level of isolationism, so I for one am glad of its mess.
>>
>>73002576
Seriously, it's okay to admit that you're a fan of unnecessary complicated language. People learn Latin even nowadays, there's nothing wrong with learning something impractical. And it's much better to learn complex language since it's much more intresting.
Unnecessary complexity isn't a bad thing – it's actually awesome! Not for practical usage, though, and I wonder if even native speakers are able to percieve it as practical. Hence my post.

>unnecessary complicated language
Human languages are by nature memetic and are thus propagated by popular usage over time. The usage of the term "unnecessary" is meaningless in this context as what is truly unnecessary is phased out over time or adapted in a new manner by the grinding process of natural selection. In this case, the natural selection of language.
You are looking at the topic of language from the outside looking as though it were a finished process, when in reality you need to understand it as a constantly changing and highly adaptive process which as being going on for tens of thousands of years.

>Not for practical usage
All usage is practical, or else it would not be passed on. The only languages which are not for "practical usage" are the ones which are no longer used; the ones which are "dead" languages. You're looking at this as thought it were the blueprints to a machine made for a factory. It's not. A language isn't created and used by the masses after a long session of sitting down and writing rules for people to use.

Esperanto is an outlier.

So が in this construction necessarily will denote potential? If so, I'm going to keep that in mind as a handy trick. Though I feel like I remember reading that を was being used more and more with potential in recent times. It's frustrating how through reading, it feels like る ending godan verbs and ichidan verbs tend to be using the passive and potential the most.

"僕らは一緒にいる"

Changing to が might make the sentiment a little more confident and determined. Also, 私たち and 俺たち/俺ら seem to be more frequent in that phrase looking on google, but that doesn't necessarily mean it is "wrong", of course.

However I also know that 僕がいる itself can have a romantic sentiment (maybe someone playing a bunch of date sims could confirm lol), in the context of being alone with a loved one. Outside of that context, it probably doesn't have that(?)...

That's awesome. Is this the program you used? http://www.japanvisa.com/visas/japan-college-student-visa

This is totally achievable for me - I have a really good academic record. But, I would only have a year and a half maybe before I'd be in Japan, assuming I go straight from undergrad to graduate with just the summer in between.

I'm doubtful I could learn Japanese that fast...
>>
>>73031478
If you get the Monbukagakusho scholarship the embassy arranges your student visa for you, so yeah it's not a problem. I obviously went through the Japan embassy in NZ, you'd want to go through their embassy in your country.

When I sat the exam for the scholarship I'd only been learning for a year and a half, it's plenty doable if you love VNs. And you don't need to be that good, they offer you 6 months of language training when you get to Japan, although I turned that down because I don't think I need it.

Good luck, maybe I'll see you there. Posting from Sydney Airport.

Wow, that's really exciting. Thanks for sharing, really. I hope your studies go well and you enjoy your time there.

I'm going to try to get more serious about actively reading in addition to my grammar/Anki reps (and hopefully up my grammar study) to try to be ready.

>Monbukagakusho scholarship
Thanks, I've been reading about this. So, my goal is to reach at least N2 level in a year or so, then. I hope I can do it. I'm glad they give you six months of training, since I have a feeling I might need it.
>>
>>73033211
Saw this program a few months earlier, but I've been graduated for almost 3 years already. Guess I'll never be an anime.
>>
>>73032996
Thanks, I'm really looking forward to it. And yeah reading lots is the best advice I can give for learning Japanese. For getting the scholarship though, make sure you keep on top of deadlines and requirements, knowing Japanese is less important than having a good research proposal and application and interview. My embassy hosted an explanation seminar where they explain what you have to do, check if yours does the same.

>>73033211
I hope I don't regret not doing the 6 months, it would've been useful for speaking and handwriting. I just didn't want to spend all my time with other gaijin and not Japanese people, and most of the Japanese I'll need to learn will be specialist vocab for my field of study anyway.

Hey guys, In the context of 週3でネギ買ってこよう, what does 週3 even mean?

Think it mean the same as 週三回.

Three times a week, that sort of thing?

When writing your own name in katakana does it have to be the exact same as the "official" pronunciation of the word? My last name is the name of semi-decently common object so it's a word in Japanese in some sense but I don't really like the sound of the "official" pronunciation so the way I write it is slightly different. Normally I wouldn't really care but I'm in kendo and need my name in katakana for my 名札.

Was looking for a particular kbub reaction face and ended up instead buying the manga these reaction faces came from, because I couldn't find scans online. If anyone wants it, here is a link:

While flicking through the rip I noticed what I assume is a Captain Tsubasa reference. Worth it.

You can write it how you pronounce it or the way it is commonly pronounced in Japanese (if it is used in Japanese).

For example, you can write "Wolf" as either "ウォーフ" or "ウルフ". Your name, your choice.

>the kanji for "mix" is basically "watered down descendants"

>>73034737

Do you have any info on similar programs to this for people who are part way through a PhD? Although the one of my field's biggest conferences is being held in Japan next year so I'll probably be going there regardless, it'd be cool to do a year of postdoc work in Japan after I finish.
>>
>>73043303
Which "mix" are you referring to?
混ぜる
交わす
溶く
雑える
合する
Or are you referring to something like RTK keywords? Descendant looks more like a child with a tied up child next to it, 子孫.
>>
Is there a site/tool where I could see a particular kaji used in a simple sentece without having other kanji's in that sentence into a minimum so I could focus on the kanji I'm studying?
