Oh boy, people really need to go to Cuba.

As someone who has spent a fair bit of time in Cuba, here's the basics of what I've seen:

While you should keep an eye on your wallet or watch in crowded areas, you don't have to worry about getting shot or stabbed like in some countries. It's closer to protecting yourself from gypsy thieves in European cities than worrying about your life in some Latin-American countries.

Almost everyone is happy to talk with you and discuss things as long it's not a sensitive topic. Families are welcoming and people are generally happy to have an extra person to share with or go to an event with.

While the countryside is beautiful, once you get out of the city and tourist areas you start noticing the big class divides. There's a huge disparity between the upper and lower classes, with a large number of people just scraping by when it comes to having their own place and raising their kids.

Their tourism industry is significant so you can always just go to sit around if you like. All the places I've stayed have been clean with decent food and friendly, helpful staff.

All in all, it's a great place to either have a vacation or visit and roam around a while but I wouldn't live there unless you got really attached to the people, who are mostly great, and I had a large amount of money.

Oh, and try to just be straight up with the police. They're nice if you don't try to mess with them or weasel your way out of anything.
