Russia not only gave Finland autonomy and later things like own army, own currency, own parliament etc things that were building blocks on the way to independent nation, they supported finnish nationalism as a counter to swedish nationalism. Compared to Swedish rule, Russian rule was much much better for ordinary finns.

But that's where you're wrong. Russians never set out to straight up eradicate our language, merely to remove our special privileges as an autonomous grand duchy.
