China can build as much as it can because it ignores anything remotely related to our urban planning, which ranges from environmental impact assessments to simply figuring out what the best option may be under a given circumstance.

In Shanghai, they built the world's fastest commercial MagLev rail line, leading from the main international airport to... a station that is right outside the downtown core. The station is already served by a conventional subway system which takes longer to cover the same distance, but has much greater availability and may well actually connect you to your final destination.

Point is, China has money to throw around, but it's not necessarily being put to good use.

It really pisses me off that here in Australia everything has to be means tested to such levels that it just never, ever goes ahead.

I mean, one day we will have to build the East Coast HSR, but each year they wait, it just gets more and more and more expensive.

Because we are democracies, it means everyone has to agree on everything and even if something does go ahead, generally you get a change in government half way through and they pussy out changing the entire thing and creating the worst of both worlds.

Good example is the Sydney Opera House, when the government switched, the new government basically pulled funding so the interior of the Sydney Opera House has worse acoustics than a school hall. It's legitimately considered one of the worst live music venues on earth.

Really good book on the subject is called "Red Plenty" and it's basically how the USSR consistently self-sabotaged because it was run entirely through nepotism and everyone at the top was an incompetent retard to insane levels.

The book though does give the view the system COULD have worked, if they actually had competent people who gave a fuck at the top. There are a few stories in the book of incredibly intelligent and well meaning people who actually could have changed things for the better, chewed up and spat out by the system.

Everyone uses Fiber nowadays, what happen is some (most) providers just split their fibers and use a media converter to handle a coaxial cable to your house.
The equipment is much cheaper, and you still got a decent throughput. (seriously, who needs 100Mb connection in 2017?)

Not true.
Internet "speed" (god, i hate use this word) is increased by offer. Probably they have a few large ISP that offer only a basic set of commercial packets.
Again, Fiber cable is cheap, cheaper than an average coaxial cable, but the manpower to install it is extremely expensive in first world countries. Here in Brazil, we can hire people do dig 2 meters under the soil and make a 100km, for the price that in Australia would only pay for a few meters of cable (even the cable being cheaper there).
