Besides conquistadors, no real sudden colonization of working nation states happened. Most colonization happened slowly and bit by bit.

East India Company ruled over India. You can even guess how that happened. They began by working there. Then they needed guards. The guards became a militia. The whole system developed into a small state with its bureucrats. It engulfed the whole subcontinent.
