Does Australia have a proper culture?

I'm from Melbourne, and I honestly don't think we have any culture. It feels like we just borrow it all from the US.

I was having an argument with a friend of mine earlier today about whether Australia has any culture or not, and when he mentioned Abos I said Abo culture doesn't count because of how primitive and shit it is. Then he started getting mad at me over using the term Abo to describe the, well, Abos. Then we had another argument about PC culture and why it's wrong that I think it should be okay to use terms most people think are offensive (aka: nigger, chink, abo, etc.). He says he finds it offensive because he has Abo blood in him. So now not only does he have Abo blood, but also German, Spanish, Dutch, British, and Scottish. I don't think I believe him.

Anyways enough about my blog. Back to the question, does Australia have a proper culture?

More proper culture than Canada at least, so there's that

We were meant to be a British colony before we told England to fuck off so we could find our own path.

Now we're an American colony.

The answer is no.

Australia (and New Zealand) are geographically isolated and located too far away from other meaningful countries yet have advanced society.
And that is the characteristic point but that's different from "culture" i guess

I mean England doesn't have direct command of our country anymore. If they went to war again with Europe tomorrow, it'd be our decision to decide whether we wanted to jump in or not, not a forced conscription like it was before.

And there;s nothing wrong with it. What's the point in going full autist about it?

I've always seen Australia as a southern Canada of sorts. We don't really have a national identity, but we do have different cultures at the provincial level. Quebec is an extreme example of this, but the other provinces have it as well to varying degrees. Is there anything like that with the Australian states?

Australia is basically like a country where 99 percent of it is like the American red neck south with different accents, just replaces the trucks with utes the American flags with Aussies flags.

Then the only places normal people live are Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

And if you go more than 20ks outside of any of those places it's like the south of America.

Australia = shit version of California with worse accents and like 10 years behind. If you hate Californians you will really hate Australians.

Australia is a floating version of Bakersfield.
>>
>>72699499
Yes, but it's much less pronounced than others. Australia is a really young country that, unlike the US, never really fealt a need to break away from the mother country. In time, it will become more distinct from Britain, but right now it maintains strong similarities
>>
>>72702759
Like take these nepalese people and they go to an Aussie... "This is my culture it goes back 100's of years and is a strong part of my peoples identity"

Than the Aussie goes "Yeah, mate we got culture like that to, what we do is get drunk and watch sport.. that's our version of the same thing"

How is it that a bogan is pretty much the same thing as a red neck in almost every way.

Redneck's say "Real amuricans drive trucks"

Aussies say "real australians drive utes"

Rednecks american v8 muscle cars

Bogans love Australian v8 muscle cars.

Rednecks and bogans both love beer

They both love sports and often care about it more than education.

They both love to go hunting and killing things.

How did they end up as basically the same thing despite being so far apart?

The same anglo people in the same situations. The difference is the location
>>

This is literally Western culture but it has been exported all over the world. Traditional dress is just old styles, we have art deco, glass&steel, modernism, any of the "trendy" clothing. It's all the same shit. The old obscure stuff is no more "real/valid" culture than modern Western culture, and modern Western culture just seems like "no culture" because of its massive success.

We have been a country for 200 years, whereas every country with a "culture" has existed for hundreds or even thousands of years. And in this day and age, it's too hard to develop a culture. Sometimes having culture is a bad thing - it holds countries back. The only culture thing I'd like Australia to have is a unique food culture with easily recognisable dishes worldwide and not meme shit like vegemite.

Yeah, I hear this no-culture meme a lot since I live under Comrade Trudeau but it simply isn't the case.

The most different country is probably the US though, then Canada. Australia and NZ are a lot closer to the UK than we are but all of us are pretty similar.

In some senses the US is more "British" than the UK. For example, continuing to not use metric and sticking with imperial. Pretty based imo.

depends if you consider the multicultural sides of Melbourne and sydney as the unique Australian culture, or a bastardisation of other cultures and not combining to something greater.

definitely the early settlers developed their own life style and values unique to Australia, we've got banjo patterson and henry lawson who based careers in writing around that, that or an icon like ned kelly

i reckon we've got culture, foath doesn't matter if it's a bit of a joke

What do you mean? Our institutions are the products of colonial rule and the core of our populace were settlers and convicts from the UK. Of course Australia has become much more since then with the intake of various peoples and cultures into our daily life. But, ""Australia"" as a thing is a slice of Britain circa 1788 plonked onto this landmass that has since developed into its own entity, it didn't just come into existence as its own independent entity.

The only thing about Australian culture that I can think of are those cool looking hats and kangaroo roundels on your planes. But aside from that, there is not much culture. Not in the food, no, it's southern usa canjun cousine.

But the decoration is pure australian culture, at least in the brazilian restaurants.

I remember the first time I went to outback an a kid. The stylish wooden facade and interiors (pic related), the dark ambient inside with yelloish lights hanging on every table, nice comfy furniture, the walls stuffed from to bottom with rugby jerseys, australian flags, boomerangs, abo paddles, crocodiles, landscape pictures and postcards from australia, koalas, cricket and rugby memorabilia, british stuff, funny road signs with odd animals, outback hats, iced tea, steve irwing-like things, kangaroo plushes for the kids to play with.

It was awesome. still is.

You guys should embrace this tropical british culture instead of just being recolonized by americans.

Are you kidding me? We're the ones responsible for outback no going bankrupt every year.

The best selling outback is in rio. The bigger ones are here. Outback is like the new church to the brazilian middle class.

It's impossible to get a table without waiting 2 hours in the weekends. The years pass and outback only becomes more popular as the masses rise from poverty into middle class.

Australian cuisine is slowly developing, I think more of our chefs need to leave the city and really discover the native ingredients in our forests, coastline, desert and bush. One of the best restaurants in the world (Attica in Melbourne) is Australian cuisine.

Heard of that one. Thing is, it's ridiculously expensive and not everyone can access it. We need our own versions of street food, or something like a national dish to cook at home that we can be recognised by and then develop more dishes from there.

And sometimes the food culture of other regions and countries is overrated, like the whole balkans region is mostly meat and potatoes but they give it different meme foreign names.

I completely agree. We need to have our native herbs, vegetables, fruits and meats easily accessible in markets.

I commend Attica for pioneering this, I just hope it filters down into the everyday Australian's diet. And there's hope yet, Brazilian cuisine didn't take off domestically until very recently and it's currently undergoing somewhat of a renaissance. It's only a matter of time til that happens here, I just hope I'm around to see it.

There was a fairly thriving rock scene here in the 70's and 80's, this sounds quite similar to a lot of the other bands of the time (Hunters & Collectors, Crowded House, Triffids etc.). Of course all Anglo countries share musical influences, as does the Spanish speaking world.

For a start Dire Straits are British, and another thing is they sound like any other Anglo rock band from that era. Britain, Australia, Canada and America have all shared and been inspired by eachother in terms of rock music. Britain and America being the two big players in this and it'll be these two countries which will have unique or standout sounds for certain bands.

What does it matter? Australia might have less culture but its a lot more recognizable and influential than other countries.

Anybody would recognize a dude dressed like a bush ranger as Australian. Show some dude dressed in traditional Cambodian culture and nobody but seasian would recognize it. And Cambodia has a lot more culture than Australia.

How much culture you have doesnt matter if you are too irrelevant to export it. Thats why "cultureless" places like Canada have recognizeable flags and clothes and food while culture-rich places like the baltics or central asia are complete unknown to most.

I don't, but at our core we try to be like everyone else.

Wouldn't the right wing agree? Rather than lie to ourselves about where our media and values come from, if we recognize they're largely American and British then we can start developing a standalone Australian identity.

The alternative is much worse. If you're willing to import everything about your nation, then your identity is built on loose ground and can be heavily influence by demographic changes.
